Aníkúlápó Series 2 Sparks Debate — Afolayan Stands by His Vision.

Nollywood filmmaker and director Kunle Afolayan has defended his creative vision following mixed reactions to “Aníkúlápó” Series 2, stating that he does not expect universal approval or understanding of his work.

In a recent video circulating online, Afolayan addressed critics of the series, explaining that his storytelling approach is intentionally crafted for a niche audience that appreciates layered narratives and culturally rooted themes. According to the award-winning filmmaker, his projects are designed to stimulate deep thinking rather than simply appeal to mass entertainment expectations.

“We make films for the intellectuals. We make films for people who can think,” Afolayan said. “I don’t expect that everybody would like my film. I don’t even expect that everybody will understand my film.”

The director noted that filmmaking, like any art form, is subjective, and differing opinions are inevitable. While some viewers have questioned certain creative choices in the latest instalment of the fantasy drama, Afolayan maintained that his primary goal is to remain authentic to his artistic vision and the cultural storytelling style he has consistently championed throughout his career.

He explained that the project was conceived with a particular audience in mind — viewers who enjoy symbolic storytelling, historical influences, and philosophical undertones. According to him, feedback from academics, scholars, and industry professionals has reinforced his confidence that the series is resonating with the intended audience.

“I expect that the people I was appealing to, the people I had at the back of my mind when I was conceiving the idea, will get it,” he said, adding that several professors and deep thinkers have commended the depth and thematic direction of the production.

“Aníkúlápó,” which blends Yoruba mythology with elements of drama and fantasy, has been widely discussed since its debut, sparking debates about narrative complexity, pacing, and artistic interpretation. Despite the criticisms, Afolayan’s stance reflects a broader conversation within Nollywood about balancing commercial appeal with artistic expression as the industry continues to evolve on the global stage.

Known for visually rich productions and culturally immersive storytelling, Afolayan has built a reputation as one of Nollywood’s most experimental filmmakers, often pushing boundaries with historical epics and unconventional narratives. His latest comments suggest he remains committed to creating films that challenge audiences intellectually, even if they do not achieve universal acceptance.

Initiatives
Every year, World Music Day serves as a reminder of the powerful role music plays in
shaping culture, identity, and human connection. In Nigeria, especially, music has
become more than entertainment. It is how young people express themselves, tell
their stories, build communities, and increasingly, create opportunities for global
relevance.
From Afrobeats becoming an international force to local sounds influencing pop
culture conversations across the world, Nigeria’s music industry has evolved into one
of the country’s strongest cultural exports. But behind the success stories and
chart-topping moments is a growing need to properly support the next generation of
talents who will carry the industry forward.
For years, TomTom has maintained a strong connection with Nigeria’s youth culture
and entertainment scene, growing beyond a household menthol candy brand into
one that naturally exists within music and pop culture conversations. From major
concerts and live music experiences to youth-focused creative initiatives like; Trace
in the City, and the MTV Base Cypher, the brand has consistently shown up in spaces
that matter to young Nigerians.
In recent time, that relationship with culture is evolving into something more
intentional through initiatives like Breathe Academy, the Breathe For It Summit, and
the Breathe Through It Verse Challenge, platforms designed to support, inspire, and
empower emerging music talents.
As Nigeria’s music industry continues to gain global recognition, there is also growing
awareness around the importance of mentorship, education, and access for
emerging talents. While talent is abundant, many young creatives still struggle with
understanding the business side of music and navigating the realities of an
increasingly competitive industry.
This is part of what makes initiatives like Breathe Academy relevant. TomTom’s online learning platform created to help aspiring artists and creatives
better understand both the craft and business of music. At a time when many young
talents are trying to navigate an increasingly competitive industry, access to
practical knowledge and mentorship has become just as important as talent itself.
Through curated learning sessions, industry-led conversations, and expert insights,
participants gain exposure to areas like branding, music distribution, content
creation, marketing, audience building, and career development. The platform is
helping simplify industry knowledge in a way that feels practical, relatable, and
accessible for young creatives trying to find their footing.
Ahead of World Music Day, TomTom continues to strengthen its position as a brand
that understands and contributes to Nigeria’s music culture not only through
entertainment experiences, but also by helping create opportunities for the next
generation of artists, creators, and music entrepreneurs to grow and succeed.

Imo State Delegate Unveils SafeTell NG, Nigeria’s First Anonymous Reporting App for Survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence

For many contestants, the Miss World Nigeria stage represents the pursuit of a crown. But for Unegbu Adaobi Sandra, who represented Imo State at the 2026 edition of the pageant, it became an opportunity to champion something far more powerful — a mission to tackle sexual and gender-based violence in Nigeria, and a digital platform to prove she meant it.

During her participation in the national pageant, Adaobi Sandra officially launched SafeTell NG, a groundbreaking mobile application designed to give Nigerian survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) a safe, anonymous, and accessible space to report incidents, seek support, and access legal and medical resources.

The initiative, unveiled under the pageant’s globally recognized Beauty With a Purpose philosophy, seeks to leverage technology, advocacy, education, and partnerships to build safer communities and provide support for vulnerable populations

In Adaobi Sandra’s words, “I did not come to this pageant just to compete,” She told correspondents on the sidelines of the grand finale. “I came because millions of Nigerian women and girls are suffering in silence, and I refused to stand on a national stage without using that platform to say — your story matters, and you do not have to face this alone.”

A Crisis That Demands Action
The statistics that drove Adaobi Sandra to create SafeTell NG are as sobering as they are urgent.

According to available data, one in three Nigerian women has experienced some form of violence, yet fewer than five percent of survivors ever receive any support.

Reports indicate that during the COVID-19 lockdown alone, SGBV cases rose by a staggering 149 percent across 23 Nigerian states — yet no national digital reporting platform existed to meet the surge in need.

SafeTell NG, Adaobi Sandra says, was built precisely for that gap. The platform allows survivors to report incidents anonymously, connect with trained counselors via in-app chat, locate nearby Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) and shelters, access legal guidance under Nigeria’s Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act, and trigger an SOS alert to trusted contacts in emergencies.

Critically, the app also features a USSD and offline mode — ensuring that survivors in rural communities with limited internet access are not left behind.

“A woman in a village in Imo State deserves the same access to help as anyone else. SafeTell NG was built with her in mind,” she stated.

“Technology should serve everyone — not just those in Lagos or Abuja,” she added.

A woman in a village in Imo State deserves the same access to help as anyone else. SafeTell NG was built with her in mind.”

From Imo State to the National Stage
A native of Imo State, Unegbu Adaobi Sandra has long been passionate about the intersection of technology, health, and human rights.

She is also the founder of the Adaobi Sandra Foundation, a nonprofit organization focused on health, education, and the empowerment of vulnerable people across Nigeria.

SafeTell NG is one of the projects under that vision — using innovation to fill the gaps that government and traditional systems have left wide open.

Her decision to use the Miss World Nigeria platform to launch the app was deliberate. “Pageants reach people that policy papers do not,” she explained.

“When you have a national audience watching, you have a responsibility to say something that matters. I chose to talk about SGBV because it is not a whisper issue — it is a national emergency that deserves a national conversation.”

Building a Safer Nigeria
SafeTell NG is currently in development, with Adaobi Sandra actively pursuing partnerships with key organizations including the Mirabel Centre, WARIF (Women at Risk International Foundation), Stand to End Rape (STER), and the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs.

The platform is also seeking grant support from international bodies including UN Women Nigeria, the Ford Foundation, and USAID.

For Adaobi Sandra, the pageant was never the destination, it was the megaphone.

“Crowns are symbolic, but purpose is enduring. Miss World Nigeria gave me a stage,” she said.
