Funke Olaode: Twenty-Seven Years of Telling Nigeria’s Story Life & Style.

In the bustling two-storey building newsroom of THISDAY Newspapers in Ikeja, Lagos in January 1999, to which I resumed as an intern from the prestigious Polytechnic Ibadan where I had just completed a rigorous two-year training, I faced an uncertain future. A green horn in the field of journalism and new to the hustle and bustle of Lagos, far from Ibadan where simplicity seemed to be the order of the day, I took each day as it came.
But I met the most amazing person in my boss, Mr. Steve Nwosu, whom I now jokingly refer to as ‘a brother from another mother”. He welcomed me with open arms and showed me the rudiments of journalism. Mr. Nwosu discovered my talents early, noting that I am a people’s person. This was after an interview I had with the late Funso Williams in March 1999 with the headline: “An evening with Governor Lagos never had”.
That was how my career picked up in ThisDay, even as a cub reporter. I was assigned to interview the who is who in town. After I returned to school, ThisDay kept the window of opportunity open for me to contribute editorial pieces from Ibadan as a freelance journalist, especially during the holidays.
After my internship at ThisDay under an amiable Mr. Steve Nwosu in 2000, I went back to The Polytechnic, Ibadan for my Higher National Diploma (HND). As I was heading back to school, there was a burning desire in me to keep the flame of journalism lit in me during the internship, burning. With the backing of Mr. Steve Nwosu and ThisDay, which recognises talents and encourages the all-round growth of members of staff, I linked up with a ThisDay correspondent in Ibadan, the late Mr. Ademola Adeyemo fondly called ‘Prince’ or ‘Baba Ibadan’.
Adeyemo welcomed me. I told him my mission, adding that I observed that ThisDay, particularly the weekend titles, are people-oriented and that most interviews focused on Lagos and Abuja personalities. I explained my desire to open up Ibadan with the conviction that such a drive would boost the revenue of ThisDay in terms of copy sales and advertisement. The late Adeyemo agreed with me and we drew a long list of names, including Chief Richard Akinjide, SAN; Chief Afe Babalola, SAN; former Governor of Oyo State, Chief Omololu Olunloyo; Dr. Oba Otudeko, Prof. Bolanle Awe, Prof. Bimpe Aboyade and Sen. Iyabo Anisulowo, just to mention a few. I resumed fully to the campus of Ibadan Polytechnic as a full student while I was ready to explore the city of Ibadan to interview the who is who in the ancient city.
Letters requesting interviews were written and sent out; and with my meagre stipend as a student, I hopped from one big house to another to drop the correspondences. It was a long road to victory but it was well worth it as I got lucky with 75 percent of those we requested to interview agreeing to the sessions.
My first point of call was the home of Chief Richard Akinjide at his ‘The Rock’ residence tucked inside Idi-Ishin in Jericho GRA, Ibadan. The legal luminary appeared anxious when I met him but an exciting interview followed. It was a memorable interview and its headline still lingers on my mind: I Am Fulfilled. It was published on June 30, 2000.
ThisDay generously used his childhood, wedding, and family pictures. Chief Akinjide was so impressed with the outcome that there was an outpouring of emotions. His interview opened the floodgates of interviews of prominent personalities across the country for me. By the time I graduated and joined ThisDay fully in 2004, former ThisDay Editor, Mr. Simon Kolawole, (who was in charge of the Saturday title at the time) encouraged me to interview similar big personalities. Mr. Kolawole assigned me to the ‘Memoirs’ section of the newspaper which celebrates outstanding Nigerians who have made giant strides in different endeavours.
With great enthusiasm, I set about it and successfully provided exciting personalities for 14 years, working with seven different Saturday editors until my promotion to Assistant Editor for ThisDay on Sunday in 2018. By that time, I had interviewed some 4,000 personalities.
Until recently, when I embarked on academic exploits across three continents: Europe, London and the prestigious Harvard University, United States, I served as editor of The Glitterati, a Lifestyle Magazine Pull Out in the Sunday edition of ThisDay where notable personalities were weekly guests. In December 2023, I became Editor of Crime and Punishment, a weekly Wednesday column focused on Nigeria’s crime and justice system. The role involves coordinating with judiciary stakeholders, supervising reporters and presenting crime stories anchored on accuracy and sensitivity.
Mine is a long journey to career success, which continues to unfold. Immersing myself into the profession presented me with early demonstrations of what would later become my hallmark: an unwavering commitment to excellence. I learnt early that every story has a human face and behind every headline is a person, a family, a community. Our job is to tell their truth with dignity. I did.
I had mentors who cut across ages. I learnt from the doyen of journalism and former governor of Ogun State, Aremo Segun Osoba during an encounter in 2005, the importance of ‘delayed gratification’. Osoba described journalism as community service, noting: “If you serve the society genuinely, the society will serve you in return.” This has played out for me, indeed.
From trainee to freelance reporter (1999-2000), and then full-time journalist (2004–present), my rise through the ranks was marked by consistency and innovation.
The media landscape is shifting rapidly, headlined by the rise of social media. Rather than settling into editorial leadership alone, I horned my skill further. I pursued further academic development to strengthen my expertise in strategic communication, organisational communication and crisis communication at Harvard University, Erasmus University in Rotterdam in The Netherlands and International School of Communication, London. It is a realisation that today’s communicator must understand, not just how to tell a story, but how to build reputations, manage crises and align messages with organisational objectives. These skills complement journalism; they do not replace it.
Less I forget, journalism opens the window into another world and broadens your horizon. I am a beneficiary of early exposure. Honestly, those moment remain memorable. From London to the Middle East, Europe, America as well as the East, West, North and South of Africa, it has been a roller coaster covering events and learning about other cultures.
Accompanying the Former First Lady of South Africa, Graca Mache to Lusaka, Zambia as the only Nigerian journalist to attend Women Economic forum remains evergreen. Being invited by the Ethiopian Airlines’ management to Houston, Texas for its inaugural flights to one of the United States cities as well as California State University, Sacramento when the legal luminary, Mallam Yusuf Ola Ali, SAN was honoured alongside Ghanian former President, Nana Akufo Edo were memorable.
How can l forget my my firs time at Burj Arab in Dubai, the only 7 Stars in the world to cover an award of recognition conferred on Dr. Ahmed Salawudeen, President of Standard Insurance Consultantsa Limited. Being part of the team by the University of Lagos on its Partnership for Change programme to Frankfurt in Germany in 2022 was an eye opener that with the right frameworks, Nigerian educational system has what it takes to compete on the global stage.
Trusted and tested. I had an exclusive access to the United States Consulate home in Lagos when I was invited to interview the outgone Ambassador, Mary Beth Leonard. The list goes on.
My journey over the past 27 years reflects my steady professional development, from trainee reporter to Assistant Editor; from journalism graduate to certified strategic communicator.
My contribution lies not only in bylines and credentials, but in the stories I have told, the institutions I have supported and the individuals I have assisted along the way.
As I forge on in my career, I remain a professional who combines editorial experience with strategic insight. I will continue to edit, write, consult and mentor, contributing to Nigeria’s evolving media and communication landscape with depth, professionalism and integrity.

Restoring Hope Through Better Sight; Joy Ogunsan and Soleeha Musa-Etiko Provide Free Eye Screening, Prescription Glasses to Underserved Nigerians Through MediServe.
For millions of Nigerians, clear vision is often taken for granted until blurred sight begins to steal the simple joys of everyday life. Reading a text message, identifying a familiar face across the road, driving safely through traffic, or threading a needle can suddenly become daunting tasks when eye problems go untreated. Yet, across the country, many people continue to live with avoidable visual impairment simply because quality eye care remains beyond their financial reach.
Health experts have repeatedly warned that many eye conditions, including glaucoma and refractive errors, can be effectively managed when detected early. However, poverty, limited awareness, and inadequate access to routine eye examinations continue to deny thousands of Nigerians the opportunity to preserve one of life’s greatest gifts, that is, the ability to see.
Against this backdrop, two young women, long before earning their medical degrees, are already demonstrating what compassionate healthcare leadership can look like.
Through MediServe, a female-led healthcare initiative they founded, aspiring medical students Joy Ogunsan and Soleeha Musa-Etiko are quietly proving that meaningful impact is not determined by age or professional titles but by the willingness to identify a need and respond with compassion.
Their latest intervention unfolded at MeCure HealthCare Limited in Oshodi, one of Lagos’ busiest commercial hubs, where commercial drivers, elderly residents, traders and teenagers gathered at the Debo Industries Compound of MeCure HealthCare Limited to receive the gift of clearer vision. The outreach marked the conclusion of an earlier free eye screening exercise during which about 60 residents underwent comprehensive eye examinations conducted by professional eye care specialists. Following detailed assessments, 14 beneficiaries with the most urgent visual needs were selected to receive specially prescribed medicated glasses, individually produced to match each person’s diagnosis.
For the two co-founders, the exercise was never about distributing spectacles. It was about restoring independence, improving safety and giving people the confidence to carry out everyday activities without unnecessary visual strain.
Soleeha Musa-Etiko, Founder of MediServe said: “We realised that many Nigerians quietly struggle with eye problems without seeking help until the situation becomes severe. The testimonies have been deeply encouraging. Some beneficiaries told us they can now see clearly again, while others said the persistent itching they experienced has stopped. Seeing that transformation is the greatest reward for us.”
According to her, Oshodi was deliberately selected for the initial free eye screening because it offers direct access to commercial drivers, elderly citizens, commuters and other members of the public who may otherwise have limited access to routine eye care.
Her co-founder, Joy Ogunsan, explained that although MediServe has broader healthcare ambitions, eye health became their first area of intervention after observing the increasing number of Nigerians living with preventable visual problems. “We’ve seen many elderly people struggling with poor vision, and we’ve also come across cases of glaucoma and other eye diseases that often go unnoticed until they become serious,” she said.
“We wanted to contribute our own quota by making eye care accessible to people who ordinarily may not be able to afford it.”
Despite being students preparing for university, both young women have balanced academic responsibilities with fundraising, partnership development and community mobilisation to sustain the initiative. They acknowledged that securing institutional support was one of their biggest challenges, but support eventually came through family members, friends, sponsors and healthcare partners who believed in their vision.
The partner on the project, MeCure Eye Centre described the outreach as different from many community eye programmes because each beneficiary received glasses specially prescribed after thorough clinical evaluation.
The Chief Optometrist, Dr. Comfort Ikedieze Isaac highlighted: “The glasses were individually prepared to serve both distance and near vision. Many people attend eye outreaches expecting ready-made glasses, but these prescriptions were specifically designed for each beneficiary after careful examination,”she explained.
She also stressed the importance of routine eye examinations, noting that dangerous conditions such as glaucoma often progress silently before symptoms become obvious. “Many patients only present when the disease has reached an advanced stage,” she said. “Early detection remains the best way to preserve vision.”
For beneficiaries, the impact was immediate and deeply personal. Mr. Kelechi Okwuosa, who received prescription glasses for the first time, described the experience as life-changing.
“I used to struggle with blurred vision whenever I wanted to read,” he said. “Now I can read comfortably, even on my phone. Everything is much clearer.”
Mrs. Olarenwaju Funmilayo also expressed gratitude after years of struggling with blurry vision. “I can now see clearly,” she said with excitement. “These young ladies have helped many people in our community. I pray God continues to bless them.”
A 14-year old beneficiary, Muiz Balogun, said the persistent itching that had troubled his eyes had significantly reduced after receiving his glasses.
Beyond the distribution of prescription lenses, the outreach became a powerful reminder that healthcare interventions do not always begin inside large hospitals or require billion-naira budgets. Sometimes, they begin with two determined young people who refuse to overlook the suffering around them.
Looking ahead, Joy Ogunsan and Soleeha Musa-Etiko hope to transform MediServe into a fully established non-profit healthcare organisation capable of reaching underserved communities across Nigeria. Their long-term vision includes expanding into other areas of healthcare, building a strong volunteer network and, ultimately, establishing a hospital that reflects their commitment to accessible and equitable healthcare.
At a time when conversations around healthcare often focus on infrastructure, funding and policy reforms, the story of MediServe offers an important lesson that compassion remains one of medicine’s most powerful tools.
Other dignitaries in attendance during the distribution of the free medicated eye glasses are the Managing Director and CEO of Executive Hotel and Suites, Dr. Ajoke Ogunsan; Consultant Ophthalmologist at MeCure, Dr. Sunday Alabi and Nurse Manager, MeCure, Mrs. Gloria Odok among others.

Rotary District 9111 donates Peace Institute Building to Olabisi Onabanjo University

As part of efforts aimed at preventing conflicts and promoting sustainable peace, members of Rotary International District 9111 yesterday donated Peace Institute Building to the management of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye Ogun State.
In his speech, District Governor of Rotary International District 9111, Rotarian Henry Akinyele said the Peace Institute is the District and Rotarians statement that peace must be taught, researched and practised, beginning from campuses and extending into communities.
To him, rather than waiting for conflict to happen, Rotarians chose to prevent it through education, dialogue and research.
Earlier this Rotary year, Akinyele recalled, ‘we organised a Peace Summit where participants agreed with the United Nations that quality education should include peace education. This Institute will train peace builders from different sectors of society in mediation, conflict analysis and non-violent communication’
Saying peace is everyone’s responsibility, Akinyele also added the project demonstrates the power of partnership among Rotary, Olabisi Onabanjo University, government and the wider community working together.
Specifically, he noted, ‘the United Nations also affirmed that conflict is one of the greatest causes of poverty and inequality. When communities are in conflict, schools close, farms are abandoned, businesses suffer and young people lose opportunities.
By investing in peace, we are protecting education, livelihoods and the future of our communities.
In conclusion, he disclosed, ‘today’s commissioning is another example of Rotary keeping its promises. I must acknowledge our Immediate Past District Governor, Dr. Oluwole Kukoyi, who conceived and introduced the three-month Certificate Programme in Peace Building, Conflict Prevention and Security Studies during the 2024–2025 Rotary year.’
In her speech, Ogun State Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele noted that Rotary has made significant contribution by donating the Peace Building.
‘I want to congratulate the Vice Chancellor, management and staff of OOU for the gesture. The facility will support conflict prevention, mediation and community development. ‘ She added.
On her part, OOU Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics, Prof. Olatundun Abosede stated the facility is an investment in peace promotion. To her, ‘we are deeply grateful to Rotarians for the cause.’
