FRSC Responds to Growing Concerns Over National Driver’s Licence Delays.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has officially responded to recent media reports highlighting the delays in issuing national driver’s licences across Nigeria. The statement, delivered by the Corps Public Education and Strategic Communication Officer (CPESCO), Olusegun Ogungbemide, was aimed at addressing public concerns and correcting some of the misconceptions that have surfaced in the wake of the delays.
Ogungbemide acknowledged the critical role the media plays as a watchdog, ensuring transparency and accountability in public service delivery. However, he emphasized the need for accurate reporting to avoid misleading the public about the actual causes of the delays in the production and issuance of the National Driver’s Licence.
He stressed that the FRSC has not placed blame on any party involved in the tripartite agreement responsible for the driver’s licence production process. “At no time did the FRSC blame anyone in the tripartite regarding the driver’s licence issue,” Ogungbemide stated. He reiterated that the Corps is not interested in apportioning blame but is focused on ensuring that the system functions effectively to deliver quality service and ensure customer satisfaction.
Explaining the complexities of the licence production process, Ogungbemide pointed out that it involves sophisticated intelligence and data-gathering capabilities. These complexities necessitated a comprehensive overhaul of the entire system, which has taken time to implement. He noted that this overhaul was initiated as one of the first priorities of the current FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, who assumed office in May 2024.
Upon taking office, Corps Marshal Mohammed made it his priority to address the challenges hindering the efficient production of driver’s licences. He conducted an on-site assessment of the production facility to gain a firsthand understanding of the issues affecting operations. This visit led to a series of interventions that have since revived the production process.
According to Ogungbemide, the interventions have been successful, with the identified issues being decisively addressed and resolved. Production has since resumed at full capacity, with the Corps implementing a 24-hour production schedule to clear the backlog of pending licences. He confirmed that as of the current date, over 189,256 licences have been produced and are ready for collection at various State Boards of Internal Revenue across the country.
The Corps Marshal has also reassured the public that the integrity of the driver’s licence process will be maintained, ensuring that the licences remain internationally acceptable. He encouraged applicants who are awaiting their licences to visit their respective state collection centers to retrieve their licences as the Corps continues its efforts to clear the remaining backlog.
Ogungbemide’s statement reflects the FRSC’s commitment to resolving the delays and restoring confidence in the national driver’s licence system. The Corps remains dedicated to providing efficient and reliable service to the public, with the ultimate goal of ensuring that every eligible driver receives their licence promptly.

Eid-El-Fitri: LASTMA GM Extends Felicitations, Assures Smooth Traffic Flow, Reaffirms Zero Tolerance for Traffic Violations Across Lagos
The General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki has extended his warm felicitations to Muslim brothers and sisters across the state, urging them to sustain the virtues of discipline, patience and civic responsibility cultivated during the holy month of Ramadan.
In a press statement e-signed and released to the National Association of Online Security News Publishers, NAOSNP by the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq stated that, “As Muslims in Lagos and beyond prepare to celebrate the sacred festival of Eid El-Fitr, the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Olalekan Bakare-Oki has extended his warm felicitations, urging the faithful to sustain the virtues of discipline, patience and civic responsibility cultivated during the holy month of Ramadan.”
According to the statement, “In a goodwill message marking the occasion, Bakare-Oki commended the Muslim Ummah for their spiritual devotion, resilience and moral uprightness throughout the fasting period.”
“He emphasised that these commendable qualities should not end with the season but should be reflected in daily conduct, particularly in maintaining orderliness and respect for traffic regulations on the State’s roads.”
“While conveying his goodwill, the LASTMA General Manager reaffirmed the Authority’s firm commitment to enforcing traffic laws, stressing that there will be zero tolerance for all forms of traffic violations before, during, and after the festive period.”
“He advised motorists, commercial drivers and other road users to avoid reckless driving, illegal parking, route violations, unauthorised off-loading, driving against traffic (one-way) and other unsafe practices that could endanger lives and disrupt traffic flow.”
“While we celebrate this important occasion, all road users must exercise caution and strictly adhere to traffic rules. LASTMA will not tolerate any action that puts lives at risk or hinders the free flow of traffic,” he stated.
Bakare-Oki further assured residents and visitors that the Authority has put in place a comprehensive and well-coordinated traffic management plan to ensure smooth vehicular movement across major roads and busy areas within the State.
He disclosed that personnel have been strategically deployed to key locations, including highways, major junctions and areas expected to witness increased socio-religious activities in order to prevent congestion and respond swiftly to any traffic-related issues.
The General Manager added that LASTMA officials will maintain round-the-clock monitoring and traffic control operations, working closely with other security and emergency agencies to ensure safety, maintain order and minimise traffic disruptions during the celebrations.
Bakare-Oki therefore called on all Lagosians to cooperate with traffic officials, remain patient and comply with road safety rules, noting that collective responsibility is essential for achieving a safe and efficient transport system.
“As we celebrate with our Muslim brothers and sisters, we urge all residents to prioritise safety, respect authority and contribute to a peaceful and congestion-free environment,” he added.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority remains committed to delivering effective traffic management services, especially during peak and festive periods, in line with its vision of ensuring a safer and more efficient transportation system in Lagos.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a nationwide initiative to empower 10,000 Nigerian women and vulnerable populations with electric tricycles for commercial and productive use under the Green Economy Empowerment 774 (GEE774) Programme, in partnership with Sparrow Mobility Limited, an electric mobility company within the A4&T Group.
The programme, led by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development under the Honourable Minister, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, will be implemented across all 774 Local Government Areas, providing women with access to electric tricycles and electric tricycles for transportation and rice-milling activities. – passenger and agro transportation
The partnership, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding, positions Sparrow Mobility as a technical and implementation partner, responsible for deploying electric mobility solutions designed for real commercial use, income generation, and long-term sustainability.
Commenting on the partnership, the Group Managing Director, Ayo Ademilua said, “Electric mobility should not be limited to experiments or urban showcases. Through this programme, we are deploying electric vehicles that are designed for daily commercial use, income generation, durability, and transportation of agricultural products. This partnership demonstrates how clean and sustainable transportation infrastructure can directly support livelihoods, women’s economic participation, and also contribute to Nigeria’s NDC goals.”
To support the effective rollout of the programme, Sparrow Mobility will leverage the broader technical and operational experience of the A4&T Group in power generation, mini-grid development, and energy infrastructure deployment. This includes drawing on A4&T’s track record in building and operating decentralized power systems to support the development of charging infrastructure and battery swap stations required to keep vehicles on the road and businesses running reliably.
Sparrow Mobility’s participation in the GEE774 Programme aligns with the Group’s broader focus on expanding energy access beyond electricity generation alone, extending it to include clean transportation systems that support productivity, livelihoods, and sustainable economic activity across communities.
The initiative contributes to job creation, entrepreneurship development, gender inclusion, and Nigeria’s Net Zero emissions target by 2060, in line with the Paris Agreement.
The rollout of electric tricycles under the GEE774 Programme will commence in phases, with a focus on operational readiness, user training, and long-term system support to ensure sustained impact beyond initial deployment.

Lagos Approves 13% Fare Increase for BRT, Cites Rising Operational Costs.
The Lagos State Government has approved a 13 per cent increase in fares across services operating under the Bus Reform Initiative (BRI), including the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system and standard bus routes across the state.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu gave the approval following what officials described as a passionate appeal from regulated public transport operators facing mounting financial pressures amid Nigeria’s challenging economic environment.
The revised fare structure, according to the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), will take effect from Monday, March 2, 2026.
In a statement signed by LAMATA’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, the agency explained that the adjustment is aimed at cushioning the severe impact of ongoing economic pressures on public transport providers while ensuring the sustainability of services relied upon daily by millions of Lagos residents.
LAMATA noted that the decision aligns with the state’s established annual fare review mechanism. However, it stressed that the urgency of the current review was driven by persistent inflationary trends and the rising cost of operations in virtually every aspect of the transport value chain.
Bus operating companies under the initiative have reportedly been grappling with escalating expenses, including:
Higher prices of imported spare parts due to foreign exchange fluctuations
Upward adjustments in staff salaries, particularly following the implementation of the new national minimum wage
According to the statement, these cumulative pressures have significantly strained operators, threatening the long-term viability of services if no remedial action was taken.
Beyond routine operational costs, transport operators are also investing heavily in fleet renewal. LAMATA disclosed that companies are procuring newer, cleaner, and more fuel-efficient buses as part of efforts to enhance passenger comfort, maintain high safety standards, and align with Lagos State’s environmental sustainability goals.
The introduction of modern buses, officials say, is intended to reduce breakdowns, improve travel time reliability, and lower carbon emissions across the state’s transport network.
While acknowledging that fare increases can place additional pressure on commuters, the state government assured residents that the decision was taken after careful consideration.
Authorities emphasised that the 13 per cent increment reflects an attempt to strike a delicate balance between keeping public transport affordable and ensuring that operators can continue to provide safe, reliable, and efficient services.
LAMATA reiterated that regulated fares under the BRI remain structured and monitored to prevent arbitrary price hikes, unlike some informal transport segments.
What This Means for Commuters
From March 2, 2026, passengers using BRT corridors and standard BRI routes should expect moderate adjustments in their fares in line with the approved 13 per cent increase. Specific fare tables are expected to be made available at terminals and through official communication channels.
The Bus Reform Initiative remains a cornerstone of Lagos State’s mass transit strategy, serving hundreds of thousands of commuters daily and playing a crucial role in reducing traffic congestion and improving mobility in Africa’s most populous city.
As economic realities continue to evolve, transport analysts say periodic reviews may become inevitable. However, stakeholders will be watching closely to ensure that service quality improves in tandem with any fare adjustments.
For many Lagosians, the coming weeks will test how effectively the state balances economic sustainability with the everyday transportation needs of its citizens.
