From Adoption to Innovation: Scaling Africa’s Startup Ecosystem

By Oluwole Asalu

A common sight in Yaba, Lagos, is young entrepreneurs huddled over laptops in shared workspaces. They are piecing together apps and platforms that could one day compete with Silicon Valley’s best. The energy in Nigeria’s tech scene is strong. Over the last 10 years, a new generation of innovators has emerged across Africa, from Nairobi to Cape Town. They are building solutions for their own communities rather than for distant markets. Yet the question remains: can Africa go beyond just using imported technologies and actually develop the next generation of homegrown solutions that can scale globally?

The signs are promising. Africa’s digital economy is projected to reach $180 billion by 2025 and as much as $712 billion by 2050. In just the first five months of 2025, startups across the continent raised more than $1 billion in funding, with Nigeria leading the pack. But behind the headlines lies a deeper challenge: to ensure this growth is not just about foreign investors backing familiar fintech models, but about unleashing the continent’s full innovative potential.

Building for Local Realities

Imported solutions have long struggled to meet Africa’s unique needs and will continue to do so. A payment system designed for Europe’s smooth banking infrastructure, for instance, fails in areas where cash is dominant and internet access is unreliable. This gap, however, has opened the door for local innovation. M-Pesa in Kenya changed the game for mobile money, providing financial access to millions without bank accounts. In Nigeria, LifeBank has digitised blood supply chains, linking thousands of hospitals with vital resources.

These are not mere copies of existing models; they succeeded because they were designed for the specific realities of African societies. They show that real change occurs when technology is tailored for the local context. At Quomodo Systems Africa, we have always believed that Africa’s strength is not in mimicking Silicon Valley but in tackling African issues with homegrown solutions. Whether in healthcare, agriculture, or logistics, successful entrepreneurs will be those who best understand their environment.

There is also a need for more strategic handshakes between entrepreneurs and the government in developing suitable policies that promote business growth. Nigeria’s Startup Act, enacted in 2022, marked a significant step forward, establishing a legal framework to help founders access funding, incentives, and clearer regulations. Similar initiatives are appearing across the continent, showing that governments recognise technology as a key driver of growth.

However, policy frameworks are just the starting point. Implementation is more important. Too much funding still goes into fintech, leaving other important sectors lacking support. At the same time, infrastructure issues are severe: broadband access in Africa is only 37 percent, and in Nigeria, power outages can disrupt innovation just as much as inadequate investment. Without affordable internet, reliable electricity, and good logistics, even the brightest ideas can struggle.

We must find a way to keep our best talents within the shores of our country and also build a system that allows them to thrive. Nigeria, with an average age of just 16.9 years, has a lot of potential. Yet brain drain is a worry, as many talented individuals move abroad for better opportunities. The challenge lies not only in producing more skilled engineers but also in fostering an environment where they want to stay, build, and grow.

From Local to Global

If nurtured properly, Africa’s startup ecosystem could mirror the path India took with IT outsourcing. India’s industry, worth more than $245 billion today, grew out of deliberate investments in education, skills alignment, and export-oriented policies. Africa, with its demographic dividend, has the raw material for a similar transformation. Nearly 70 percent of its population is under 30, compared to ageing populations in much of Europe and Asia.

Already, global tech giants are paying attention. Microsoft and Meta have invested heavily in African hubs, while European firms such as Telesoftas have set up operations in Lagos after successful talent partnerships. For Africa, the goal should not just be to host foreign branches but to grow indigenous giants that can compete internationally.

The success of Nigerian unicorns like Flutterwave, Interswitch, and Andela proves this is possible. Each began by solving local problems but is now recognised on the global stage. The next wave must broaden beyond payments into health, education, green energy, and agriculture, sectors that define Africa’s development trajectory.

Reframing the Narrative

Perhaps one of the biggest challenges is perception. Too often, Africa is viewed as a recipient of aid rather than a producer of innovation. This narrative undermines investor confidence and obscures the remarkable successes already unfolding on the ground. Every startup that scales, every engineer who excels abroad, chips away at outdated stereotypes.

At Quomodo Systems Africa, we see part of our role as telling this story differently: championing African innovation, advocating for supportive policies, and helping local startups position themselves not just for survival but for global relevance.

Scaling Africa’s startup ecosystem will require collaboration across borders and sectors. Governments must commit to consistent, innovation-friendly policies. Investors must show patience and an appetite for risk. Entrepreneurs must keep building with context at the core, not imitation. And the diaspora must remain engaged, bringing back skills, networks, and capital.

If these pieces come together, Africa could leap from being a fast-growing market to a global tech powerhouse. The stakes are not abstract. They are about jobs for millions of young people, better healthcare for families, more efficient agriculture for farmers, and a stronger, more resilient economy for the continent.

The shift from adoption to innovation is already underway. The question is whether we can scale it fast enough. The potential is undeniable. The opportunity is urgent. And the time to act is now.

Young Nigerians Harness Technology to Reimagine the Future of Transportation at SystemSpecs’ 2026 CDEC.

SysstemSpecs-Logo-1024x576 Young Nigerians Harness Technology to Reimagine the Future of Transportation at SystemSpecs' 2026 CDEC.

From Road Safety to Digital Infrastructure, Over 4,000 Participants Propose Bold IT-Driven Solutions for Nigeria’s Transportation Sector

LAGOS, NIGERIA – MAY 27, 2026

On Wednesday, May 27, 2026, SystemSpecs announced the winners of its 2026 Children’s Day Essay Competition (CDEC) via a live broadcast – bringing to a close nearly four months of nationwide engagement, research, writing, and evaluation that had mobilised thousands of young Nigerians to think boldly about how technology can transform the way people and goods move across their country.

Now in its seventh year, CDEC is far more than an essay competition. It is one of SystemSpecs’ flagship ESG initiatives – a deliberate, long-term investment in shaping a generation of young Nigerians who see technology not as a distant abstraction, but as a living tool for transforming their country, one sector at a time. Each year’s theme is carefully chosen to direct young minds toward a pressing national challenge, inviting them not merely to describe problems, but to think critically, propose solutions, and begin to see themselves as architects of Nigeria’s future.

This year’s theme – “Achieving Safer and More Effective Transportation in Nigeria Through Information Technology” – challenged participants aged 9 to 16 to engage Nigeria’s transportation sector through the lens of innovation, safety, efficiency, and national development.

A Programme Built for Depth and Authenticity

The CDEC process is intentionally rigorous. Submissions opened in February, giving participants ample time to research, reflect, and craft thoughtful responses. Shortlisted essays then advanced to a second-level evaluation – a direct engagement process through which judges could understand the thinking, background, and personal motivation behind each submission.

Mrs. Bukola Adeboye, Group Head of Corporate Services at SystemSpecs, described the evaluation process as one of the competition’s most defining features. “The second-level evaluation remains one of the most important aspects of the competition because it validates authenticity while helping judges understand the heart, background, and transformative story behind each essay. The conversations this year were deeply insightful and inspiring,” she said.

She also noted the impressive quality of ideas that emerged this year. “What stood out was how thoughtfully these children connected technology with practical solutions across road, rail, air, and water transportation. Many proposed ideas around commuter safety, digital monitoring, emergency response systems, traffic coordination, and accessibility,” she added.

A National Movement Gaining Momentum

Since its launch in 2020, CDEC has received over 20,000 essay submissions from children across all six geopolitical zones – a testament to the growing hunger among Nigerian youth to engage meaningfully with the challenges shaping their country. The 2026 edition sustained this momentum with strong, nationwide representation, and a continued rise in female participation that has grown by 36.5 per cent over the past three years – reflecting a competition that is becoming more inclusive with every passing year.

This year’s top 50 finalists across both the Junior and Senior categories were drawn from multiple geopolitical zones, underscoring the truly national character of the initiative.

Meet the 2026 Winners

In the Senior Category, Obioha Pharez of The Court Hill College, Lagos, claimed first place, followed by Abiodun Ayomide of Oshodi Comprehensive Senior High School, Lagos, and Eruba Samuel of Deeper Life High School, Port Harcourt Campus, Rivers State.

In the Junior Category, Idris Zainab of You-Nik International Technopreneurship Secondary School, Lafia, Nasarawa State, emerged as the winner. Sanu Anjolaoluwa Adaora of Kesbe International School, Lagos, and Dieke Oluomachukwu Rachael of Divine Love Secondary School, Enugu, followed as first and second runners-up respectively.

Category winners will receive ₦1 million in cash, alongside laptops, educational resources, one-year internet subscriptions, and additional prizes. Second and third-place finalists will each receive laptops in addition to cash prizes of ₦750,000 and ₦500,000 respectively, with consolation prizes for finalists placed fourth through tenth.

Obele Community Senior High School was named the winning school in the Senior Category, while You-Nik International Technopreneurship Secondary School, Lafia, claimed top honours in the Junior Category. Both schools will receive 10 laptops each.

Investing in Nigeria’s Future, One Generation at a Time

Mr. ‘DeRemi Atanda, Managing Director of Remita, reflected on the broader purpose of CDEC within SystemSpecs’ commitment to national development. “CDEC continues to show that Nigerian children are observant, solution-driven, and capable of contributing meaningfully to conversations around national development. For us, this initiative is about investing in future leaders and innovators who can think critically about the country’s future,” he said.

Mr. Udy Ngele, Managing Director of HumanManager, connected this year’s transportation theme to the wider imperative of digital transformation. “Digital transformation should not happen only within workplaces. It must also reflect in the ease, safety, comfort, and efficiency people experience daily while moving across the country. Smarter transportation systems ultimately improve productivity, workforce wellbeing, and human capital outcomes,” he stated.

Mr. Atanda also acknowledged the emotional weight of this year’s celebration amid growing national concerns over the safety of children. “While we celebrate the brilliance and promise of Nigerian children today, we stand in solidarity with families affected by insecurity and continue to hope and pray for the safe return of every child in captivity. Every child deserves the freedom to dream, learn, grow, and thrive safely,” he said.

SystemSpecs reaffirmed its commitment to CDEC as an enduring platform for discovery, purpose, and national transformation – one that will continue nurturing the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers who will help define the direction of Nigeria’s future in an increasingly technology-driven world.

HumanManager Limited (HML), a leading data-driven HR and payroll solutions provider in Nigeria, and a subsidiary of SystemSpecs Group, recently hosted a thought-leadership webinar themed “The Future of HR: From Manual Processes to Workforce Intelligence,” bringing together professionals across technology, FMCG, manufacturing, consulting, and SME sectors to discuss the evolving role of Human Resources in today’s digital economy.

The webinar, held virtually on April 28, 2026, featured Ibem K. Idika, Group Head, Human Resources and Administration at SystemSpecs Holdings Limited, as keynote speaker.

During the webinar, moderated by Esther Momah, Lead PR and CSR at SystemSpecs, participants explored the evolution of HR from traditional administrative functions to strategic, data-driven workforce intelligence systems capable of supporting smarter business decisions, productivity optimization, and sustainable organizational growth.

Speaking during the session, Ibem Idika noted that organizations must begin to see workforce data as a strategic business asset rather than merely an administrative necessity.

“HR is no longer just about managing people; it is about unlocking intelligence from the workforce,” he said while highlighting the growing importance of predictive analytics, workforce intelligence, digital HR systems, and AI-powered decision-making in modern organizations.

He further emphasized that businesses that leverage workforce intelligence effectively will gain stronger competitive advantage in an increasingly dynamic and technology-driven business environment.

The webinar also examined the major phases in the evolution of HR – from personnel administration and process standardization to strategic HR, digital HR, and workforce intelligence – while highlighting the increasing role of data literacy, digital fluency, and workforce analytics in shaping the future of work.

According to HumanManager, the session forms part of the brand’s broader commitment to supporting organizations with insights, tools, and digital solutions that improve workforce management, payroll administration, employee experience, and operational efficiency.

Speaking on the importance of the initiative, Jerry Adeyeri, Brands & Marketing Lead at HumanManager, noted that the webinar reflects the brand’s commitment to helping organizations navigate the future of work through technology, workforce intelligence, and digital HR transformation.

As businesses continue to navigate digital transformation, experts at the webinar stressed the need for organizations to adopt more intelligent and adaptive HR systems capable of delivering real-time workforce insights, predictive talent strategies, and data-backed decision-making.

HumanManager, a leading HR and payroll technology company, reinforced its position as a trusted workforce technology partner with a strong exhibition presence at Lagos Tech Fest 2026, held recently in Lagos.

With over three decades of experience supporting organisations across Africa, HumanManager continues to help businesses manage their people operations with greater ease, accuracy, and confidence. From SMEs to large enterprises and public institutions, the company’s systems are designed to reduce operational stress, simplify compliance, and give leaders peace of mind as their businesses scale.

Across Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, and Kenya, HumanManager has enabled organisations to streamline payroll, manage employee records efficiently, and respond quickly to regulatory changes – ensuring that growth does not come at the cost of control.

Speaking during the event, Mr. Udy Ngele, Managing Director of HumanManager, highlighted the growing importance of structured workforce systems in today’s evolving business climate, saying: “We are seeing a clear shift in the workplace; managing human capital has become more critical than ever.

Recent tax law changes illustrate this well. Organisations had to respond at unprecedented speed, and for those using HumanManager, the transition was seamless, with implementation that is both straightforward and adaptive.

In the early days, the mantra was ‘talk is cheap, show me your technology.’ Today, technology is widely accessible. The real differentiator is how effectively it is applied to solve real problems. At HumanManager, our focus is not just on building technology but on enabling its best application. That is why our next phase is centred on integrating artificial intelligence into everyday workflows. We believe AI will unlock new levels of efficiency and insight, helping organisations manage people and processes more intelligently.”

Lagos Tech Fest, now in its sixth edition, remains one of the most influential technology platforms in Nigeria’s innovation ecosystem. The festival convenes startups, investors, innovators, global technology companies, government representatives, and enthusiasts for a dynamic mix of conferences, exhibitions, pitch competitions, networking sessions, and industry showcases. The event serves as a critical convergence point for ideas, partnerships, and forward-looking conversations that shape the trajectory of technology adoption and digital transformation across the region.

Throughout the festival, HumanManager engaged business leaders and ecosystem stakeholders on practical approaches to managing modern workforces in a dynamic regulatory environment.

Discussions centred on building resilient systems that support compliance, enable cross-border expansion, and create operational clarity in increasingly complex markets.

As Africa’s business landscape continues to evolve – with changing regulations, diverse teams, and expanding regional footprints – HumanManager remains purpose-built for this reality. By combining enterprise-grade robustness with intuitive design and adaptive flexibility, the platform empowers organisations to scale confidently, maintain compliance, and focus on operational efficiency.
