MTN Nigeria, Ultima Studios Unveil New Music Reality Competition: Next Afrobeats Star✓✓✓Newzspy Entertainment.
MTN Nigeria has officially launched Next Afrobeats Star (NAS), a bold new music reality competition designed to uncover and elevate the next generation of Afrobeats talent. The show was unveiled on Saturday, August 2, 2025, during a media event held at the MTN Rooftop Event Centre in Ikoyi, Lagos.
Onyinye Ikenna-Emeka, Chief Marketing Officer, MTN Nigeria, said: “Next Afrobeats Star is a bold initiative by MTN Nigeria, in partnership with Ultima Studios and ONErpm, to discover and elevate the next global icon of Afrobeats. At MTN, we believe in progress, not just as a brand stance but a purpose.
“We believe that every Nigerian, regardless of background, location, or education, deserves a chance to be connected, seen, heard, and celebrated. That is why we are taking this message to every corner of Nigeria, from the bustling cities to the most remote villages so that no youth is left behind. Because talent knows no boundaries, and neither should opportunity.
Today, Afrobeats is a global force, filling stadiums, topping charts, and inspiring millions. But the journey is far from over. The Next Afrobeats Star is our commitment to the future of this movement. It is a platform where raw talent meets real opportunity. Where the rhythm of Nigeria meets the reach of the world.”
A partnership between MTN Nigeria, Ultima Studios, and ONErpm, one of the fastest-growing music companies in the world, Ikenna-Emeka revealed that the winner will receive a $100,000 music deal made possible by a collaboration between ONErpm and U-Records. The remaining four finalists will also walk away with music deals ranging from $25,000 to $75,000.
This effort, Ikenna-Emeka explained, aligns with the Nigerian Government’s Destination 2030 strategy, which aims to position Nigeria as Africa’s leading hub for creative excellence. “Through the Destination 2030 strategy, the government is working to position Nigeria as a leading global hub for creative excellence by the year 2030. This vision is about more than economic growth, it’s about cultural pride, global influence, and national identity. It’s about creating an enabling environment for artistic brilliance, promoting diversity and creativity, and preserving the rich heritage that makes Nigeria unique.”
MTN’s partnership with Ultima Studios brings decades of production and talent development expertise to the show. Known for their work on Project Fame and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Ultima brings its expertise in audio-visual production.
Femi Ayeni, CEO of Ultima Studios, explained the standout quality of the show. “What makes this show different is because for the first time, we are having the producers, the beat-makers, actually recording original songs for the contestants for the show. So, they [the contestants] will be doing covers, but at the end of the day, their original songs are the ones that will determine how well they do on the show.” The producers have been revealed as Andre Vibez, Puffy Tee, Sarz and P. Prime.
Head of Content at Ultima Studios, Oluwabori Richards, explained that Next Afrobeats Star will feature both online registration and in-person auditions. “After texting NAS to 13013, you get a text back with a link and a unique code,” he said. “That link takes you to the Next Afrobeats Star website, and then you enter your unique code and email address. Once you do that, you fill in your registration details.”
Richards added that the website hosts 10 to 12 instrumentals from the four producers. “Download any of the tracks that you want, you make music on it and then you put it back on the website. When you do that, we have A&R execs from ONErpm who will be reviewing all the entries.”
He also noted that regional auditions will be held in Jos, Enugu, and Lagos, giving applicants the option to audition either digitally or in person. “So once we collate all the entries, both regionally and on digital platforms, 300 people will be shortlisted to come to the trial.The trial is the first round of the show, and that’s the first time you will be performing before judges,” he said.
The competition is open to Nigerians and will focus not only on discovering talent but also on nurturing it through professional development, mentorship, and access to industry-standard resources. To apply, text NAS to 13013 using an MTN line. Visit mtn.ng/NAS for more information.

Restoring Hope Through Better Sight; Joy Ogunsan and Soleeha Musa-Etiko Provide Free Eye Screening, Prescription Glasses to Underserved Nigerians Through MediServe.
For millions of Nigerians, clear vision is often taken for granted until blurred sight begins to steal the simple joys of everyday life. Reading a text message, identifying a familiar face across the road, driving safely through traffic, or threading a needle can suddenly become daunting tasks when eye problems go untreated. Yet, across the country, many people continue to live with avoidable visual impairment simply because quality eye care remains beyond their financial reach.
Health experts have repeatedly warned that many eye conditions, including glaucoma and refractive errors, can be effectively managed when detected early. However, poverty, limited awareness, and inadequate access to routine eye examinations continue to deny thousands of Nigerians the opportunity to preserve one of life’s greatest gifts, that is, the ability to see.
Against this backdrop, two young women, long before earning their medical degrees, are already demonstrating what compassionate healthcare leadership can look like.
Through MediServe, a female-led healthcare initiative they founded, aspiring medical students Joy Ogunsan and Soleeha Musa-Etiko are quietly proving that meaningful impact is not determined by age or professional titles but by the willingness to identify a need and respond with compassion.
Their latest intervention unfolded at MeCure HealthCare Limited in Oshodi, one of Lagos’ busiest commercial hubs, where commercial drivers, elderly residents, traders and teenagers gathered at the Debo Industries Compound of MeCure HealthCare Limited to receive the gift of clearer vision. The outreach marked the conclusion of an earlier free eye screening exercise during which about 60 residents underwent comprehensive eye examinations conducted by professional eye care specialists. Following detailed assessments, 14 beneficiaries with the most urgent visual needs were selected to receive specially prescribed medicated glasses, individually produced to match each person’s diagnosis.
For the two co-founders, the exercise was never about distributing spectacles. It was about restoring independence, improving safety and giving people the confidence to carry out everyday activities without unnecessary visual strain.
Soleeha Musa-Etiko, Founder of MediServe said: “We realised that many Nigerians quietly struggle with eye problems without seeking help until the situation becomes severe. The testimonies have been deeply encouraging. Some beneficiaries told us they can now see clearly again, while others said the persistent itching they experienced has stopped. Seeing that transformation is the greatest reward for us.”
According to her, Oshodi was deliberately selected for the initial free eye screening because it offers direct access to commercial drivers, elderly citizens, commuters and other members of the public who may otherwise have limited access to routine eye care.
Her co-founder, Joy Ogunsan, explained that although MediServe has broader healthcare ambitions, eye health became their first area of intervention after observing the increasing number of Nigerians living with preventable visual problems. “We’ve seen many elderly people struggling with poor vision, and we’ve also come across cases of glaucoma and other eye diseases that often go unnoticed until they become serious,” she said.
“We wanted to contribute our own quota by making eye care accessible to people who ordinarily may not be able to afford it.”
Despite being students preparing for university, both young women have balanced academic responsibilities with fundraising, partnership development and community mobilisation to sustain the initiative. They acknowledged that securing institutional support was one of their biggest challenges, but support eventually came through family members, friends, sponsors and healthcare partners who believed in their vision.
The partner on the project, MeCure Eye Centre described the outreach as different from many community eye programmes because each beneficiary received glasses specially prescribed after thorough clinical evaluation.
The Chief Optometrist, Dr. Comfort Ikedieze Isaac highlighted: “The glasses were individually prepared to serve both distance and near vision. Many people attend eye outreaches expecting ready-made glasses, but these prescriptions were specifically designed for each beneficiary after careful examination,”she explained.
She also stressed the importance of routine eye examinations, noting that dangerous conditions such as glaucoma often progress silently before symptoms become obvious. “Many patients only present when the disease has reached an advanced stage,” she said. “Early detection remains the best way to preserve vision.”
For beneficiaries, the impact was immediate and deeply personal. Mr. Kelechi Okwuosa, who received prescription glasses for the first time, described the experience as life-changing.
“I used to struggle with blurred vision whenever I wanted to read,” he said. “Now I can read comfortably, even on my phone. Everything is much clearer.”
Mrs. Olarenwaju Funmilayo also expressed gratitude after years of struggling with blurry vision. “I can now see clearly,” she said with excitement. “These young ladies have helped many people in our community. I pray God continues to bless them.”
A 14-year old beneficiary, Muiz Balogun, said the persistent itching that had troubled his eyes had significantly reduced after receiving his glasses.
Beyond the distribution of prescription lenses, the outreach became a powerful reminder that healthcare interventions do not always begin inside large hospitals or require billion-naira budgets. Sometimes, they begin with two determined young people who refuse to overlook the suffering around them.
Looking ahead, Joy Ogunsan and Soleeha Musa-Etiko hope to transform MediServe into a fully established non-profit healthcare organisation capable of reaching underserved communities across Nigeria. Their long-term vision includes expanding into other areas of healthcare, building a strong volunteer network and, ultimately, establishing a hospital that reflects their commitment to accessible and equitable healthcare.
At a time when conversations around healthcare often focus on infrastructure, funding and policy reforms, the story of MediServe offers an important lesson that compassion remains one of medicine’s most powerful tools.
Other dignitaries in attendance during the distribution of the free medicated eye glasses are the Managing Director and CEO of Executive Hotel and Suites, Dr. Ajoke Ogunsan; Consultant Ophthalmologist at MeCure, Dr. Sunday Alabi and Nurse Manager, MeCure, Mrs. Gloria Odok among others.

Rotary District 9111 donates Peace Institute Building to Olabisi Onabanjo University

As part of efforts aimed at preventing conflicts and promoting sustainable peace, members of Rotary International District 9111 yesterday donated Peace Institute Building to the management of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye Ogun State.
In his speech, District Governor of Rotary International District 9111, Rotarian Henry Akinyele said the Peace Institute is the District and Rotarians statement that peace must be taught, researched and practised, beginning from campuses and extending into communities.
To him, rather than waiting for conflict to happen, Rotarians chose to prevent it through education, dialogue and research.
Earlier this Rotary year, Akinyele recalled, ‘we organised a Peace Summit where participants agreed with the United Nations that quality education should include peace education. This Institute will train peace builders from different sectors of society in mediation, conflict analysis and non-violent communication’
Saying peace is everyone’s responsibility, Akinyele also added the project demonstrates the power of partnership among Rotary, Olabisi Onabanjo University, government and the wider community working together.
Specifically, he noted, ‘the United Nations also affirmed that conflict is one of the greatest causes of poverty and inequality. When communities are in conflict, schools close, farms are abandoned, businesses suffer and young people lose opportunities.
By investing in peace, we are protecting education, livelihoods and the future of our communities.
In conclusion, he disclosed, ‘today’s commissioning is another example of Rotary keeping its promises. I must acknowledge our Immediate Past District Governor, Dr. Oluwole Kukoyi, who conceived and introduced the three-month Certificate Programme in Peace Building, Conflict Prevention and Security Studies during the 2024–2025 Rotary year.’
In her speech, Ogun State Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele noted that Rotary has made significant contribution by donating the Peace Building.
‘I want to congratulate the Vice Chancellor, management and staff of OOU for the gesture. The facility will support conflict prevention, mediation and community development. ‘ She added.
On her part, OOU Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics, Prof. Olatundun Abosede stated the facility is an investment in peace promotion. To her, ‘we are deeply grateful to Rotarians for the cause.’
