Understanding the Lagos Street Sweeping Program: Structure, Remuneration, and Commitment to Worker Welfare.

20250316_104753 Understanding the Lagos Street Sweeping Program: Structure, Remuneration, and Commitment to Worker Welfare.

The Lagos State street sweeping program plays a vital role in maintaining a clean and healthy environment. The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) oversees this program, ensuring that sweeping operations run efficiently and that workers receive fair remuneration and adequate support.

Street sweepers are engaged through private companies under structured contracts, with their responsibilities and entitlements clearly defined. These private companies are responsible for directly paying their engaged sweepers. Following a recent wage review, sweeper salaries have been adjusted to align with the national minimum wage and are proportionate to their work schedule, which consists of four-hour daily shifts. Under this structure:

• Sweepers earn ₦40,000 per month

• Supervisors earn ₦50,000 per month

This arrangement provides workers with financial stability while allowing flexibility for other economic activities outside their assigned shifts.

Commitment to Worker Welfare

LAWMA is committed to improving the welfare and working conditions of street sweepers and has implemented several initiatives to enhance their safety, well-being, and efficiency. These include:

• Regular health and safety training to ensure best practices in their daily operations.

• Reclassification of sweeping routes to prioritize worker safety and security.

• Accident and emergency insurance coverage to provide medical support in case of work-related incidents.

• Provision of uniforms and necessary work implements to ensure dignity and efficiency in their duties.

Addressing Concerns and Ensuring Compliance

LAWMA takes the concerns of street sweepers seriously and remains committed to ensuring they receive fair treatment in line with agreed standards. Any reports of salary discrepancies or contractual violations are promptly investigated, and corrective measures are enforced where necessary.

The success of the street sweeping program relies on the dedication of these essential workers, and LAWMA will continue to uphold policies that ensure their welfare while enhancing service delivery for a cleaner Lagos.

Oke-Ako, Ekiti State – May 7, 2026

The National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA) has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening strategic agricultural development partnerships with Agbeyewa Farms as part of efforts to accelerate large-scale food production, youth empowerment, and rural economic transformation in Nigeria.

As part of the engagement, the management team of Agbeyewa Farms was taken on a facility tour of the NALDA Farm Estate located in Oke-Ako Community, Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State. The estate spans 1,200 hectares of farmland earmarked for cultivation by Agbeyewa Farms under the partnership arrangement.

The visit served as a follow-up to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between NALDA and Agbeyewa Farms in Abuja in November 2025. The agreement includes the cultivation and management of the 1,200-hectare farmland for NALDA, with Agbeyewa Farms designated as the anchor operator for the Renewed Hope Mega Farm Estate in Ekiti State.

Under the arrangement, Agbeyewa Farms is expected to drive operations across the agricultural hub, supporting mechanized farming, value chain development, and job creation within the host communities. Already, over 600 hectares of land have been cleared to support the expansion phase of the project.

Speaking during the visit, the Ekiti State Coordinator of NALDA, Mr. Olusegun Ayeni, said, “This initiative reflects NALDA’s mandate to open up agricultural land and partner with serious investors who can drive productivity at scale. Our collaboration with Agbeyewa Farms is a clear example of how strategic partnerships can translate into tangible agricultural development on the ground.”

In his remarks, the MD/CEO, Seyi OSKA Aiyeleso, on behalf of the Agbeyewa Farms Chairman, Mr Niyi John Olajide appreciated the Executive Secretary of NALDA Mr. Olusegun Cornelius Adebayo for enhancing and advancing the Private Public Partnership in Ekiti State and indeed Nigeria, this relationship will continue to serve as an encouragement and long lasting alliance between the two sectors of Nigerian Economy.

During the inspection tour, both parties also addressed security concerns within the operational corridor, emphasizing the need to strengthen protective measures to safeguard personnel, infrastructure, and investments across the estate. At the same time, the delegation reviewed ongoing infrastructure development within the farm settlement, including hostel accommodations and other support facilities currently under construction for workers, alongside additional mechanized support systems being deployed to enhance productivity and operational efficiency.

VP Shettima Hails Dangote as “An Institution, Not an Individual,” Urges Labour to Show Patriotism.✓✓✓Newzspy.

VP Shettima Hails Dangote as “An Institution, Not an Individual,” Urges Labour to Show Patriotism.

Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has described Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, as more than just a businessman, calling him “an institution” and “a leading light in Nigeria’s economy.”

Speaking on Monday at the 31st Nigerian Economic Summit, Shettima said the billionaire industrialist represents a symbol of resilience and patriotism, stressing that how Nigeria treats Dangote will ultimately shape how the international community perceives the country.

“Aliko Dangote, he’s not an individual, he’s an institution, and he’s a leading light in Nigeria’s economy. And how we treat this gentleman will determine how outsiders will judge us,” the Vice President declared.

Shettima pointed out that Dangote could have chosen to invest his wealth in global tech giants like Microsoft, Amazon, or Google—investments that might have multiplied his fortune to between $70 billion and $80 billion. Instead, Dangote opted to build industries within Nigeria, from cement and sugar to his multi-billion-dollar refinery project.

“But he opted to invest in his country, and we owe it to future generations to jealously protect, promote, preserve, and safeguard the interests of this great Nigerian,” Shettima noted.

Calls for Labour-Industry Harmony

The Vice President also used the platform to call for caution, restraint, and patriotism in the relationship between labour unions and the private sector. He urged both sides to focus on collaboration rather than confrontation in order to sustain Nigeria’s improving economic trajectory.

He warned against actions by labour unions that could disrupt national stability, saying:

“It’s not about holding the whole nation to ransom because of a minor labour dispute. Nigeria is greater than PENGASSAN. Nigeria is greater than each and every one of us. I’m not coming to you as a partisan.”

National Interest Above All

Shettima’s remarks come at a time of increasing labour agitation and industrial disputes, particularly in the oil and gas sector. His message was clear: while workers’ rights remain important, the nation’s economic progress must not be derailed by confrontations that could have far-reaching consequences.

By praising Dangote’s decision to invest heavily in Nigeria despite opportunities abroad, the Vice President underscored the need for a collective spirit of patriotism, sacrifice, and responsibility across all sectors of the economy.

The 31st Nigerian Economic Summit provided a platform for government, business leaders, and stakeholders to discuss strategies for building a resilient and inclusive economy amid global challenges.

Community-based non-profit distributes learning materials, inspires pupils with activities across Lagos State

Lagos, Nigeria – October 2025: The Oju Eko Community Empowerment Initiative, a non-profit organization dedicated to education and grassroots development, has launched its “Welcome Back to School” program with an impactful outreach at Ojodu Primary School, Lagos State.

The program, designed to promote the importance of education and support young learners, was warmly received by pupils, teachers, and staff of the school. The event featured interactive activities, games, quizzes, and competitions, which kept the children engaged while reinforcing the joy of learning.

In addition to the fun activities, pupils were gifted exercise books, pens, pencils, and refreshments to help them settle into the new school term with confidence.

“I am very happy today because I got new books and pens. I will use them to write neatly in class,” said 8-year-old Chisom, a Primary Four pupil.

Teachers at the school commended the initiative, describing it as a much-needed support for children at the start of a new term.

“This is more than just gifts. It is a morale booster for the children. The activities helped them build confidence and teamwork. We are grateful to Oju Eko Initiative for remembering our school,” said Mrs. Adetunji, one of the teachers.

The head teacher also expressed gratitude, noting that many pupils face challenges with basic school supplies.

“Providing these materials makes a big difference in their learning journey. We truly appreciate this effort and hope it continues,” she said.

Speaking on behalf of the initiatives, Miss Nafisat, Program Coordinator, reiterated the organization’s commitment to grassroots development.

“Education remains the most powerful tool for change. When we invest in our children, we invest in the future of our society. This program is our way of encouraging pupils to see education as the key that will open doors for them tomorrow,” he stated.

The “Welcome Back to School” program will be extended to more schools across Lagos State in the coming weeks, ensuring that more children benefit from educational empowerment.

The event concluded with excitement as pupils cheered and expressed hope for future visits.

“I enjoyed the quiz game today. I even won a pencil for answering a question correctly. I want Oju Eko people to come again!” said Temitope, a Primary Three pupil.
