Customs, Police Reinforce Inter-Agency Collaboration Through Strategic Engagement

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening inter-agency collaboration in strategic communication, public engagement, and information sharing.

The engagement occurred following a courtesy visit by the Force Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Anietie Okokon, to the National Public Relations Officer of the NCS, Deputy Comptroller (DC) of Customs, Abdullahi Maiwada, on Monday, 13 July 2026, at the Service Headquarters, Maitama, Abuja.

The visit, which formed part of the Force PRO’s familiarisation tour following his assumption of office, provided an opportunity for both institutions to deepen their longstanding relationship and explore avenues for enhanced cooperation in support of national security and effective institutional communication.

The engagement also coincided with the induction ceremony of 70 officers and men of the NCS Public Relations Unit into the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), further underscoring the growing emphasis on professionalism and ethical communication within public institutions.

In his remarks, the National Public Relations Officer of the NCS, DC Abdullahi Maiwada, expressed appreciation for the visit and commended the NPF for prioritising institutional partnerships among communication professionals within the public sector. He described the engagement as a reflection of the shared responsibility both institutions bear in shaping public perception, strengthening stakeholder confidence, and advancing government policies through strategic communication.

“The NCS values its longstanding relationship with the NPF. Today’s engagement presents another opportunity to strengthen professional collaboration between our Public Relations Units and collectively contribute towards building stronger institutions through effective communication and stakeholder engagement,” DC Maiwada stated.

Earlier, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon, noted that the NPF remains committed to fostering productive relationships with sister agencies, particularly in areas that strengthen public trust and institutional effectiveness. He explained that strategic communication has become indispensable in modern governance and security administration, making collaboration among public relations practitioners across government institutions both necessary and timely.

“This visit is aimed at further strengthening the cordial relationship between the NPF and the NCS, while enhancing collaboration in strategic communication, public engagement, and information sharing. As institutions serving the Nigerian people, we must continue to work together to promote professionalism, transparency, and effective communication in support of our national security objectives.” He concluded.

Again: Customs Hits Hard on PMS Smugglers in Adamawa. ✓✓✓ Newzspy.

...As Operation Whirlwind Intercepts 916 Kegs of PMS Worth ₦22.9 Million

In a renewed crackdown on fuel smuggling, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), through Operation Whirlwind, has once again dealt a significant blow to illicit traders in Adamawa State, intercepting 916 kegs of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) valued at ₦22.9 million.

The seizure—carried out at key flashpoints in Maiha, Mubi, Gurin, and Belel—was announced during a press briefing on 14 March 2025.

The Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi, represented by the National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs Hussein Ejibunu, stated that each intercepted keg, containing 25 litres, brought the total to 22,900 litres of PMS.

ACG Ejibunu described the operation as intelligence-driven and executed precisely, demonstrating the Nigeria Customs Service’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s resources and ensuring compliance with trade regulations.

He stated that the latest seizure follows another major interception on the Taraba axis. On 13 March 2025, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, alongside some members of his management team, announced the confiscation of 1,149 jerrycans of PMS in Gembu, Taraba State—totalling 34,470 litres.

The National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind emphasised the agency’s determination to combat fuel smuggling, which continues to threaten Nigeria’s economy and security. “The relentless efforts of Operation Whirlwind have once again yielded significant results. This interception is not just a victory for the Customs Service but a testament to the effectiveness of our intelligence-driven approach and the supportive collaboration of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA),” he said.

He further reiterated that the smuggling of PMS remains a major challenge—driven by economic disparities and the lure of quick profits. However, under the leadership of the Comptroller-General of Customs, the Nigeria Customs Service remains resolute in dismantling fuel smuggling networks, making the trade unattractive and bringing economic saboteurs to justice.

He commended the officers involved in the operation, saying, “I want to commend the officers and men of Operation Whirlwind for their bravery, vigilance, and professionalism. Your dedication inspires confidence in our ability to protect Nigeria’s economic sovereignty.”

He also called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest Customs office, stressing the need for a collective effort to tackle smuggling and ensure economic stability.

In his opening remarks, the Customs Area Controller for Adamawa/Taraba, Comptroller Garba Bashir, commended Operation Whirlwind’s efforts in curtailing the smuggling of petroleum products in the area, noting that these efforts have significantly assisted the command in reducing fuel smuggling.

During the briefing, a Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) representative, Grace Dauda, praised the Nigeria Customs Service for its determined fight against fuel smuggling. She called for the cooperation of other stakeholders and the people of Adamawa State. She reaffirmed the commitment of both NMDPRA and the Nigeria Customs Service to enforce government policies—leveraging technology, intelligence, and inter-agency collaboration to combat smuggling and safeguard the nation’s economic interests.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, alongside the entire management and officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of a highly esteemed media and public relations expert, Mallam Kabir Dangogo. His death marks the end of an era in Nigerian journalism, public relations, and corporate communications, leaving behind an enduring legacy of professionalism and excellence.

A Life Dedicated to Journalism and Public Relations.

Born on February 21, 1949, Mallam Kabir Dangogo lived a life characterized by dedication, intellectual rigor, and an unyielding passion for media and public relations. His career, spanning several decades, saw him make indelible contributions to both the public and private sectors, shaping the landscape of journalism and corporate communications in Nigeria.

Mallam Dangogo started his career as a journalist with the New Nigerian Newspaper and later worked with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), where he distinguished himself as a skilled communicator and media strategist. He served as the Managing Editor of the New Nigerian newspaper from 1988 to 1989, during which he played a pivotal role in shaping the editorial direction of one of Nigeria’s most respected publications.

Recognizing his passion for knowledge-sharing, he transitioned into academia, where he served as a Senior Lecturer at Kaduna Polytechnic, mentoring aspiring media professionals and shaping the future of journalism and public relations in Nigeria.

A Public Relations Trailblazer and Corporate Communications Expert

Beyond journalism, Mallam Dangogo was a towering figure in the field of public relations (PR) and corporate communications. His influence in the sector was profound, as he played critical roles in advancing professional PR practices in Nigeria and across Africa.

In 1990, he served as a Press Adviser for the United States Information Service (USIS), where he further honed his expertise in international media relations and strategic communication. He also held key roles in the banking sector, serving as a Public Relations Officer at Bank of the North Limited and Union Bank of Nigeria Plc, where he helped shape corporate messaging and brand reputation.

Driven by his vision for elevating PR practice in Nigeria, he founded Timex Communications, a public relations consultancy firm and communications training school, dedicated to grooming future professionals in the field. Through this initiative, he played a crucial role in mentoring young PR practitioners and fostering a new generation of skilled communicators.

His impact was not limited to Nigeria alone—he was a founding President of the Association of Corporate Affairs Managers of Banks (ACAMB), where he played a vital role in standardizing and professionalizing corporate communication in Nigeria’s banking sector. Additionally, he served as Secretary-General of the Federation of African Public Relations Associations (FAPRA, now APRA) and was the Chairman of the Nigerian Chapter of the International Public Relations Association (IPRA) between 2002 and 2006. His leadership in these international organizations solidified his reputation as one of Africa’s foremost PR practitioners.

Mallam Kabir Dangogo’s contributions to media, corporate communications, and public relations earned him numerous accolades and professional recognitions throughout his career. His remarkable achievements were acknowledged with prestigious fellowships, including:
