Rotary International District 9111 in partnership with First Bank of Nigeria Limited is set to empower 132 beneficiaries with start-up kits across various trades on Thursday, February 11, 2025, at 9 am at Rotary Centre, Ladoke Akintola Street, Ikeja – GRA, Lagos.

District Governor Nominee, Rotary International District 9111 and the Project Coordinator, Bukola Bakare disclosed that “ the vocational skills beneficiaries of these start-up kits will get free: – grinding machines,

– plumbing kits,

– deep freezers,

– sewing machines,

– generators,

– gas burners and cylinders,

– barbers and hairdressers

kits, amongst others.

Bakare added that “the community intervention project had beneficiaries from the three major ethnic groups in Nigeria drawn from Lagos and Ogun states.”

Rotary International District 9111 District Governor, Dr Wole Kukoyi in his contribution spoke on the significance of economic empowerment in Rotary’s initiatives and called for government collaboration to reach the vulnerable groups in our various communities as a means of poverty reduction in ways that are effective and efficient.

Dr Kukoyi stated that,

“Rotary’s Empowerment Initiative complements government efforts and stresses the need for recognition and partnership to enhance community development.

In his words, “We know that government alone cannot eradicate poverty completely and also achieve meaningful youths empowerment, hence our resolve to carry out these programs to complement government’s efforts.”, he said.

“So, we expect the government to recognize Rotary for what it does, and then partner with us accordingly following the type of cooperation we have with First Bank of Nigeria Limited,”he said.

Bukola Bakare,

Rotary International District 9111

District Governor Nominee and Project Coordinator added that “ all the start-up kits are free for the 132 beneficiaries and First Bank of Nigeria Limited is the major sponsor for the project”.

In her words, “First Bank is our major supporter for this program, we have a 10-year Community Empowerment plan, which is supported by First Bank as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility program” she stated.

It could be recalled that last year, 102 beneficiaries were empowered and Mrs. Kemi Kalesanwo, Director, of Lagos State Agency for Mass Education, confirmed that 22 out of the 102 beneficiaries were from the agency’s vocational training centers.

Kalesanwo said that the state government believed in public, private partnerships (PPP) and was happy with the collaboration between Rotary and First Bank.

She listed projects donated by Rotary to include the construction of one of the eight vocational training centers, owned by the agency in the Igbogbo, Ikorodu area of Lagos.

During the presentation exercise last year, Mr. Babatunde Adewale, Permanent Board Member, Lagos State Universal Basic Education (SUBEB), lauded the empowerment program while reeling out contributions and projects of Rotary International to schools in the state.

He urged other corporate organizations, government, public-spirited individuals, and philanthropists to emulate First Bank of Nigeria Limited and Rotary International’s empowerment initiatives.

In a significant move to strengthen strategic communication and professionalise its Public Relations workforce, the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has inducted seventy Public Relations officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), marking the Service’s first mass induction into the Institute since 2013.

The ceremony, held on Monday, 13 July 2026, at the Service Headquarters, Maitama, Abuja, reflects the Service’s commitment to building a corps of certified communication professionals equipped to effectively project its reforms, operations and institutional achievements.

Addressing the newly inducted officers, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, described the induction as a strategic investment in the future of the Service’s communication architecture. He noted that the Service’s transformation, including its recognition as the best-performing government agency in Ease of Doing Business, was the result of deliberate reforms that require competent professionals to communicate the Service’s successes with clarity, credibility and purpose.

He added that as the Service transitions to a technology-driven Customs administration, Public Relations practitioners must remain proactive in countering misinformation, managing public perception and sustaining stakeholders’ confidence. “Rumours will be heard, narratives will be pushed, so be ready to use your communication with clarity and the necessary measures so rumours can be addressed swiftly and decisively,” the Comptroller-General charged.

CGC Adeniyi also revealed that the Service’s flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative – Customs Cares, is set to receive recognition at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games, describing it as a legacy project whose impact must continue to be amplified through strategic, ethical and professional communication.

In his remarks, the President and Chairman of Council of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, Dr. Ike Neliaku commended the Service for prioritising professionalism and investing in the development of certified communication practitioners. He observed that under the leadership of the Comptroller-General, the Service has evolved into a national institution admired for its reforms, corporate excellence and growing influence within the global Customs community. “You can no longer dismiss matters concerning the Service. You must be proud of this as a Nigerian,” Dr. Neliaku stated.

Also speaking, retired Comptroller of Customs and former National Public Relations Officer Joseph Attah urged the newly inducted officers to uphold the ethics of the Public Relations profession by remaining truthful, accurate and responsible in their communication. He encouraged them to embrace continuous professional development through seminars, workshops and active participation in NIPR activities, stressing that effective crisis communication demands composure, empathy and strategic thinking.

In his welcome remarks, the National Public Relations Officer, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Aliyu Maiwada, asserted that this milestone would not have been achieved without the commitment of the Comptroller General of Customs as well other former Spokespersons of the Service who nurtured the unit to this enviable height.

The induction of the seventy officers marks another milestone in the Service’s ongoing reform agenda and reinforces its commitment to institutionalising excellence in strategic communication.

The Pistis Foundation’s highly anticipated Ubomi 2024 Medical Outreach is in full swing, as thousands of underserved Nigerians benefit from the comprehensive healthcare services being provided. Running from September 30th to October 4th, 2024, the outreach has already made a significant impact, providing essential medical interventions to communities that lack access to quality healthcare.

Now on its second day, the outreach has seen a remarkable turnout, with residents from underserved communities receiving free consultations, medications, surgeries, and other specialised treatments. Beneficiaries have expressed gratitude for the support and life-changing medical services they are receiving.

“We are encouraged by the overwhelming response and the number of people who have come out to access the services we are offering,” said Godman Akinlabi, Founder and Board Chair of the Pistis Foundation. “We are committed to making every day count as we push forward to reach our goal of 5,000 beneficiaries. It’s a privilege to witness the positive transformation in the lives of those who would otherwise not have access to critical healthcare.”

The Ubomi Medical Outreach, now in its fifth year, has provided over 21,000 medical interventions and performed more than 700 surgeries since its inception. Each year, the outreach continues to expand its reach, thanks to the strategic support of partners and sponsors who share in the vision of equitable healthcare access for all.

The 2024 outreach is being conducted in partnership with Pro-Health International, a leading non-profit health organisation serving as the technical partner. A team of over 100 medical professionals is on the ground, delivering primary and tertiary healthcare services, including general consultations, eye care, dental services, laboratory tests, and complex surgical procedures—all at no cost to beneficiaries.

“Every person we treat here today represents more than a statistic; they represent a story of hope and transformation. This year, we are performing surgeries for fibroids, hernias, cataracts, and other conditions that would have been otherwise unaffordable for these communities,” said Dr. Iko Ibanga of Pro-Health International. “It’s an honour to be part of an initiative that is restoring health and hope to so many.”

In addition to Pro-Health International, the Ubomi 2024 outreach is supported by a diverse group of partners, including The Elevation Church, Gateway Church, HTS Clinics, Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service, MedPlus Pharmacy, Choice Dental, The Dover Hotel, Le Moriah Residences, MykeOseh Foundation, UNIPGC, Cash Drive, and Zenera Consulting, among many others. These partnerships enable the outreach to deliver holistic healthcare services, ensuring that the lives of the beneficiaries are touched in a profound way.

The Pistis Foundation remains committed to breaking barriers to healthcare access in Nigeria. The organization encourages those in need to take advantage of the services available and invites more partners to join in supporting the initiative.
