NCC Charts New Course with Wi-Fi 6 Rollout: EVC Dr. Aminu Maida Delivers Keynote at Lagos Forum on Emerging Technologies
Lagos, Nigeria – On September 19, 2024, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) hosted its Annual Stakeholders’ Consultative Forum on Emerging Technologies in Lagos, marking a significant milestone for the country’s telecommunications sector. In a forward-thinking address delivered by Engr. Abraham Oshadami, Executive Commissioner, Technical Services, on behalf of the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, the Commission laid out its vision for Nigeria’s adoption of the 6GHz frequency band, propelling the country into the next era of high-speed internet access through Wi-Fi 6 technology.
Nigeria Set to Join Global Leaders in Wi-Fi 6 Utilization
Opening the address, Dr. Maida expressed his enthusiasm for Nigeria’s readiness to harness the 6GHz spectrum for Wi-Fi 6 applications. This move positions the country among global leaders leveraging this emerging technology to support the increasing demand for faster, more reliable internet connectivity. The NCC is committed to ensuring that Nigeria remains at the forefront of telecom innovation, improving the lives of citizens and enhancing the country’s competitiveness in the digital economy.
The EVC underscored the significance of this development, remarking, “I am particularly glad to be associated with this process because when the Government of His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, brought us on board in 2023, we took a decision to reposition the Commission to capitalize on opportunities through strategic focus areas.”
These focus areas, he explained, are driven by the unique needs and expectations of various stakeholders, including industry operators, consumers, and the government. The Commission is determined to fulfill its mandate by fostering collaboration and leveraging data, compliance, and digitalization to drive its initiatives.
Strategic Objectives to Reposition the Nigerian Telecom Sector
Since assuming office in 2023, Dr. Maida and his team have set in motion a range of initiatives designed to align the NCC’s objectives with the broader goals of the Tinubu administration. A key element of this strategy is the Ministers Strategic Blueprint, which focuses on five pillars: knowledge policies, infrastructure, innovation, entrepreneurship, and capital and trade.
Through these pillars, the Commission has taken decisive action to enhance telecommunications service delivery in Nigeria. Dr. Maida emphasized that collaboration is a critical factor in achieving these objectives. This is reflected in the NCC’s well-established tradition of participatory regulation—a policy that prioritizes input from industry stakeholders in shaping the regulatory framework.
6GHz Band: A Game-Changer for Wi-Fi and Mobile Telecommunications
At the heart of the forum was the discussion on the utilization of the 6GHz spectrum band, which spans from 5925 MHz to 7125 MHz. This frequency range offers a substantial increase in available spectrum, which is critical to supporting the growing demand for high-speed internet and the development of advanced telecommunications applications.
Wi-Fi plays a vital role in connecting homes, businesses, and public spaces to broadband services, with the majority of home internet traffic relying on Wi-Fi technology. In enterprise environments, Wi-Fi is indispensable for handling large volumes of data and supporting the simultaneous connection of numerous devices. The demand for increased capacity has put a strain on the existing 5GHz and 2.4GHz frequency bands used by Wi-Fi 5 technologies.
Recognizing this growing demand, the NCC is actively working to complement the current frequency bands with the 6GHz band, which has been allocated for Wi-Fi 6 and International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) applications following the World Radiocommunications Conference (WRC-23) held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The WRC-23 marked a major milestone in global telecommunications as it approved the use of the 6GHz band for these applications after extensive studies and consultations.
Engaging Stakeholders for a Future-Ready Telecom Industry
Dr. Maida highlighted the importance of stakeholder engagement in guiding the Commission’s decision-making process. He invited participants at the forum to share their views on the use of the 6GHz spectrum, noting that input from industry players would be critical in shaping policies that ensure the optimal use of the band.
The EVC explained, “In line with global best practices, we sincerely believe that our actions must be guided by decisions that take into cognizance the inputs from all stakeholders in the industry. The 6GHz band offers a substantial increase in available spectrum, which is crucial for supporting the growing demand for high-speed internet and advanced applications.”
The forum concluded with an open call for feedback and recommendations from attendees to ensure that Nigeria’s transition to Wi-Fi 6 is informed by a broad spectrum of industry perspectives.
Looking Ahead: Enhancing Nigeria’s Digital Future
The rollout of Wi-Fi 6 and the effective management of the 6GHz spectrum are expected to have far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s telecom industry and the broader economy. By enhancing connectivity in homes, offices, and public spaces, the NCC’s initiatives are set to bolster the country’s digital infrastructure, support the growth of businesses, and enable the widespread adoption of emerging technologies.
As Nigeria prepares to enter this new phase of digital transformation, the NCC is committed to fostering an environment where collaboration, innovation, and technological advancement can thrive, ensuring that the benefits of high-speed connectivity reach all Nigerians.
In closing, Dr. Maida’s message was clear: the future of Nigeria’s telecom sector lies in its ability to stay ahead of global trends, and the NCC is ready to lead the way in making that future a reality.
For more details on the NCC’s initiatives or to contribute to the ongoing consultation on the use of the 6GHz spectrum, stakeholders are encouraged to reach out via the Commission’s official website or contact channels.
