Aníkúlápó Series 2 Sparks Debate — Afolayan Stands by His Vision.

Nollywood filmmaker and director Kunle Afolayan has defended his creative vision following mixed reactions to “Aníkúlápó” Series 2, stating that he does not expect universal approval or understanding of his work.

In a recent video circulating online, Afolayan addressed critics of the series, explaining that his storytelling approach is intentionally crafted for a niche audience that appreciates layered narratives and culturally rooted themes. According to the award-winning filmmaker, his projects are designed to stimulate deep thinking rather than simply appeal to mass entertainment expectations.

“We make films for the intellectuals. We make films for people who can think,” Afolayan said. “I don’t expect that everybody would like my film. I don’t even expect that everybody will understand my film.”

The director noted that filmmaking, like any art form, is subjective, and differing opinions are inevitable. While some viewers have questioned certain creative choices in the latest instalment of the fantasy drama, Afolayan maintained that his primary goal is to remain authentic to his artistic vision and the cultural storytelling style he has consistently championed throughout his career.

He explained that the project was conceived with a particular audience in mind — viewers who enjoy symbolic storytelling, historical influences, and philosophical undertones. According to him, feedback from academics, scholars, and industry professionals has reinforced his confidence that the series is resonating with the intended audience.

“I expect that the people I was appealing to, the people I had at the back of my mind when I was conceiving the idea, will get it,” he said, adding that several professors and deep thinkers have commended the depth and thematic direction of the production.

“Aníkúlápó,” which blends Yoruba mythology with elements of drama and fantasy, has been widely discussed since its debut, sparking debates about narrative complexity, pacing, and artistic interpretation. Despite the criticisms, Afolayan’s stance reflects a broader conversation within Nollywood about balancing commercial appeal with artistic expression as the industry continues to evolve on the global stage.

Known for visually rich productions and culturally immersive storytelling, Afolayan has built a reputation as one of Nollywood’s most experimental filmmakers, often pushing boundaries with historical epics and unconventional narratives. His latest comments suggest he remains committed to creating films that challenge audiences intellectually, even if they do not achieve universal acceptance.
