Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has reiterated the urgent need to decentralize Nigeria’s electricity grid system to mitigate the frequent incidents of grid collapses. Speaking at the launch of Hexing Livoltek, a new electricity meter manufacturing company located in Lekki, Lagos State, on Wednesday, the minister underscored the deteriorating state of the nation’s power infrastructure and how it has made grid failures almost inevitable.
Adelabu explained that Nigeria’s current reliance on a single national grid is a critical issue, as disturbances on this grid have a nationwide impact. The minister stressed the importance of regional and state-level power grids, which would offer more localized management of electricity and protect other parts of the country from being affected by grid failures.
He pointed to the newly enacted Electricity Act as a legislative milestone that now enables subnational governments—state and local authorities—to participate in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution. This decentralization, according to Adelabu, is crucial to addressing Nigeria’s ongoing power challenges.
“We keep talking about grid collapse. Grid collapse, grid collapse—whether it’s a total collapse, partial collapse, or a slight trip-off, this is almost inevitable given the state of our power infrastructure,” Adelabu remarked during his address. He elaborated that the current infrastructure, which includes transformers that are 50 to 60 years old, is woefully outdated and cannot be expected to perform optimally.
A Path to Stability: Regional and State Grids
Adelabu emphasized that the solution to Nigeria’s frequent power grid failures lies in creating multiple independent grids at regional and state levels. This would allow for better control and isolation of problems, so that an issue with a particular grid would only affect the state or region it serves, rather than the entire country.
He further explained the current situation, where all 36 states depend on a single grid, making the system vulnerable to widespread outages. “This shouldn’t be the case. By decentralizing, we will be moving towards a system where each grid is independent, and if one fails, it doesn’t lead to a nationwide blackout,” he said.
The Electricity Act, which he referenced, gives states the legal backing to set up their own power infrastructure, which Adelabu believes will eventually lead to a more stable and resilient power supply across the country.
Infrastructure Challenges: An Ongoing Battle
Nigeria’s power grid has been plagued by frequent failures over the years, leaving millions of residents and businesses without electricity for extended periods. Adelabu acknowledged the challenges in keeping the system running smoothly, attributing the grid’s fragility to the country’s aged and poorly maintained power infrastructure.
“In the last four months, we have managed to avoid major collapses, except for a partial collapse two days ago, which lasted less than two hours,” Adelabu noted. He highlighted that while the government is working to improve response times to grid failures, the underlying issue remains the poor condition of the infrastructure itself.
Transformers that are several decades old are still in use, and according to the minister, these aging components are simply unable to meet the demands of the modern power system. “You have transformers that are 50 or 60 years old, and you’re expecting them to perform optimally? It’s not possible,” Adelabu said, stressing the need for substantial investment in upgrading the infrastructure.
The Role of Private Investment
The minister emphasized that significant investments, both from the public and private sectors, are essential to bring Nigeria’s power infrastructure up to modern standards. While the government is making efforts to manage the current grid system, Adelabu argued that without a complete overhaul and significant upgrades, the country would continue to experience power outages.
The launch of Hexing Livoltek, the company at the center of Wednesday’s event, represents a step towards addressing some of these challenges. By producing electricity meters locally, the company aims to improve access to accurate billing and metering solutions, which is another critical issue in Nigeria’s power sector.
Moving Forward
Adelabu’s remarks come at a time when Nigerians are increasingly frustrated with the power situation. Frequent outages not only disrupt daily life but also have a profound effect on the country’s economic growth and industrial development.
The minister expressed optimism that with the right policies, like the Electricity Act, and the support of both public and private investments, Nigeria can eventually achieve a more reliable and decentralized power system. However, he cautioned that this will not happen overnight.
For now, the focus remains on managing the existing grid system while working toward the long-term goal of regional and state grids. “We’re working on improving our response time, making sure we restore power quickly whenever there is a collapse. But the real solution is to overhaul the infrastructure entirely, and that will take time and investment,” Adelabu concluded.
As the power sector moves towards decentralization, Nigerians are hopeful that this new approach will lead to more stable and reliable electricity supply, and an end to the dreaded grid collapses that have become all too common.
