In a landmark initiative aimed at enhancing digital literacy and technical expertise among Nigerian youths, the Federal Government, in partnership with the World Bank and a consortium of tech firms, has successfully trained 400 Nigerians in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Cybersecurity. This initiative marks a significant step forward in the nation’s digital transformation agenda, emphasizing the importance of equipping the next generation with essential skills for the future.
The training program, launched in January 2024, was executed by a consortium led by House of Heroz (HOH) as part of the TechUnlock project. This project, located in Ajah, Lagos, was conceived in response to a call for proposals issued by the Federal Ministry of Education in 2022, which sought innovative solutions to boost digital skills across the country.
Speaking at the official flag-off of the TechUnlock project, David Ogebe, CEO of House of Heroz and Project Lead for the initiative, highlighted the significance of the program. “This is just the beginning,” Ogebe stated. “We started with 400, but next year we’re aiming for 1,000. We’re looking to reach communities that have been previously underserved—marginalized youths, people with disabilities, and others who have limited access to these vital skills.”
Ogebe emphasized the global relevance of AI and Cybersecurity, noting that these fields are pivotal to the future of technology and industry. “Digital skills are essential in today’s world, not just in Africa but globally,” he said. “We’re focusing on courses that will remain relevant for the next 10 to 30 years, ensuring that our trainees are equipped for the future.”
One of the key objectives of the TechUnlock project is to provide free, high-quality training to individuals who may not otherwise have access to such opportunities. “These courses are expensive, but we’re offering them for free,” Ogebe explained. “Our goal is to penetrate communities that can’t afford this kind of education, giving them a level playing field and a fair shot at breaking into the tech industry.”
The TechUnlock Nigeria Bootcamp is a rigorous 4-week training program designed to help participants acquire relevant tech skills that can accelerate their careers or launch them into freelancing. The program’s first cohort, which began in January 2024, included 203 trainees who underwent intensive daily training. The results were impressive, with a 95 percent pass rate in certification exams.
Following this success, a second batch of 238 trainees began their training in March 2024. These participants are currently working on their capstone projects and preparing for their certification exams, which will mark the completion of their training.
The initiative goes beyond just skill development. Representing the Minister of Education and National Project Coordinator, Ndem Ndiyo, consultant for the Innovation Grant Facility, emphasized the program’s comprehensive approach to youth empowerment. “Beyond the skills, this program also connects participants to internships, providing them with real industry experience,” Ndiyo said. “Furthermore, our MOU with the House of Heroz Consortium, an NGO, includes provisions to assist graduates with job placements.”
Ndiyo also underscored the future-oriented nature of the training. “Cybersecurity and artificial intelligence are the skills of tomorrow,” he said. “Through this program, participants earn certifications that align with the National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF), which unlocks opportunities in the labor market, enabling them to secure employment or even pursue self-employment.”
As the Federal Government and its partners look to the future, the TechUnlock project is set to scale up significantly. Plans are already in place to expand the program in 2025, reaching more communities and training even more youths. The project’s emphasis on inclusivity ensures that those who have traditionally been marginalized will have the opportunity to participate in the digital economy.
This initiative reflects a broader commitment by the Federal Government, the World Bank, and private sector partners to foster innovation, reduce unemployment, and empower Nigerian youths to thrive in the digital age. As the world increasingly shifts towards technology-driven solutions, such programs are critical in positioning Nigeria as a leader in the global digital landscape.
