‘Mushin Blast Not A Terrorist or IED Attack, but A Mechanical Explosion’ – Police

The Nigeria Police Force has officially dismissed fears of terrorism, sabotage or an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack in connection with the explosion that occurred on June 22, 2026, at No. 19 Way Street, Mushin, Lagos, confirming that the incident was caused by a mechanical failure, National Association of Online Security News Publishers, NAOSNP can report.

Addressing journalists today Thursday 25th June, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Fatai Tijani, on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu disclosed that an extensive forensic and technical investigation conducted by the Nigeria Police Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit established that the incident was “not caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), terrorist activity, sabotage, or any form of criminal use of explosives.”

According to the Police, initial reports from the scene had raised concerns that the explosion might have been linked to an explosive device, prompting security authorities to activate established protocols and deploy EOD-CBRN specialists for a comprehensive investigation. “The investigation involved a detailed assessment of the affected vehicle, examination of recovered fragments, analysis of damage patterns, collection and evaluation of physical evidence, as well as interviews with relevant witnesses,” the Commissioner stated.

CP Fatai explained that investigators found “no traces of explosive materials, detonators, initiation systems, explosive residues, or blast characteristics ordinarily associated with explosive attacks.”

He further noted that “the affected vehicle did not exhibit the structural deformation, fragmentation patterns, crater effects, or displacement typically observed in incidents involving explosives.”

According to the findings, “the incident resulted from the catastrophic failure of a pressurized mechanical component outside the vehicle,” which triggered a sudden release of energy, shattered the front passenger-side glass panels and caused minor injuries to the occupant.

“Based on these findings, the incident has been professionally classified as a Mechanical Explosion and has been officially reclassified from a suspected IED incident,” he said.

The Police reassured residents that “there is absolutely no evidence linking the incident to terrorism, insurgency, sabotage, or any threat to public safety and security,” adding that “there is no cause for alarm.”

The Command, however, urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue reporting suspicious activities while assuring Lagosians that all security-related incidents would continue to receive thorough professional investigation before conclusions are reached.
