Lagos Approves 13% Fare Increase for BRT, Cites Rising Operational Costs.

The Lagos State Government has approved a 13 per cent increase in fares across services operating under the Bus Reform Initiative (BRI), including the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system and standard bus routes across the state.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu gave the approval following what officials described as a passionate appeal from regulated public transport operators facing mounting financial pressures amid Nigeria’s challenging economic environment.

The revised fare structure, according to the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), will take effect from Monday, March 2, 2026.

In a statement signed by LAMATA’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, the agency explained that the adjustment is aimed at cushioning the severe impact of ongoing economic pressures on public transport providers while ensuring the sustainability of services relied upon daily by millions of Lagos residents.

LAMATA noted that the decision aligns with the state’s established annual fare review mechanism. However, it stressed that the urgency of the current review was driven by persistent inflationary trends and the rising cost of operations in virtually every aspect of the transport value chain.

Bus operating companies under the initiative have reportedly been grappling with escalating expenses, including:

Higher prices of imported spare parts due to foreign exchange fluctuations

Upward adjustments in staff salaries, particularly following the implementation of the new national minimum wage

According to the statement, these cumulative pressures have significantly strained operators, threatening the long-term viability of services if no remedial action was taken.

Beyond routine operational costs, transport operators are also investing heavily in fleet renewal. LAMATA disclosed that companies are procuring newer, cleaner, and more fuel-efficient buses as part of efforts to enhance passenger comfort, maintain high safety standards, and align with Lagos State’s environmental sustainability goals.

The introduction of modern buses, officials say, is intended to reduce breakdowns, improve travel time reliability, and lower carbon emissions across the state’s transport network.

While acknowledging that fare increases can place additional pressure on commuters, the state government assured residents that the decision was taken after careful consideration.

Authorities emphasised that the 13 per cent increment reflects an attempt to strike a delicate balance between keeping public transport affordable and ensuring that operators can continue to provide safe, reliable, and efficient services.

LAMATA reiterated that regulated fares under the BRI remain structured and monitored to prevent arbitrary price hikes, unlike some informal transport segments.

What This Means for Commuters

From March 2, 2026, passengers using BRT corridors and standard BRI routes should expect moderate adjustments in their fares in line with the approved 13 per cent increase. Specific fare tables are expected to be made available at terminals and through official communication channels.

The Bus Reform Initiative remains a cornerstone of Lagos State’s mass transit strategy, serving hundreds of thousands of commuters daily and playing a crucial role in reducing traffic congestion and improving mobility in Africa’s most populous city.

As economic realities continue to evolve, transport analysts say periodic reviews may become inevitable. However, stakeholders will be watching closely to ensure that service quality improves in tandem with any fare adjustments.

For many Lagosians, the coming weeks will test how effectively the state balances economic sustainability with the everyday transportation needs of its citizens.
