NIMC Moves NIN Registration to Grassroots with Nationwide Ward-Level Enrolment Drive.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced plans to roll out a nationwide ward-level enrolment exercise aimed at accelerating the registration of Nigerians and legal residents for the National Identification Number (NIN).

In a statement issued by the Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, the Commission disclosed that the grassroots enrolment initiative will commence next week, following a presidential directive to expand access to identity registration services across all parts of the country. According to NIMC, the programme is part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to deepen digital identity coverage and ensure that more citizens are captured in the National Identity Database.

Adegoke explained that the ward-level approach is designed to bring enrolment centres closer to communities, especially in rural and underserved areas where residents often face challenges travelling long distances to complete registration. He noted that the exercise will be conducted free of charge and will cater to all Nigerians and legal residents, including children, in line with the Commission’s mandate to achieve inclusive identity coverage.

The Commission emphasised that decentralising the enrolment process is expected to reduce congestion at existing centres, improve service delivery, and enhance efficiency in capturing biometric data. NIMC also urged citizens to take advantage of the initiative, stating that the NIN remains a critical requirement for accessing various government and private sector services, including telecommunications, banking, education, and social intervention programmes.

To ensure smooth participation, NIMC said ward-level schedules and locations have been published on its official website, while members of the public can obtain additional information through the Commission’s toll-free support lines and verified communication channels. The agency further advised applicants to present valid supporting documents where available and to remain vigilant against individuals or groups demanding payment, reiterating that the enrolment exercise is entirely free.

Observers say the move signals a renewed push by authorities to strengthen Nigeria’s digital identity infrastructure, improve national planning, and support security and economic initiatives that rely on accurate population data.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to working with local authorities, community leaders, and stakeholders to ensure a smooth rollout nationwide, urging residents to cooperate with registration officials and help spread awareness within their communities.
