In a landmark move to revolutionize Nigeria’s public transportation system, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the sum of ₦142.02 billion for the construction of ultra-modern bus terminals in the six geopolitical zones of the country.

The Minister of Transportation, Sa’idu Alkali, disclosed the development to journalists on Wednesday, shortly after the FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to Alkali, the project marks the first-ever direct federal government investment specifically targeted at road transport infrastructure, outside of the usual road construction and rehabilitation projects.

The contract has been awarded to Messrs Planet Project Limited, a company with a track record in modern transport infrastructure development. The terminals will be strategically located in:

Abeokuta, Ogun State – South-West

Gombe, Gombe State – North-East

Kano, Kano State – North-West

Lokoja, Kogi State – North-Central

Onitsha, Anambra State – South-East

Ewu, Edo State – South-South

Closing the Gap in Public Transport Infrastructure

Alkali lamented the absence of purpose-built, well-managed bus terminals in Nigeria, despite the country’s heavy reliance on road transport for both passenger and goods movement.

“Despite the significant role road transportation plays in Nigeria, there are virtually no purpose-built bus terminals designed to adequately serve millions of commuters. This gap has worsened issues such as increased crime rates, higher incidences of road accidents, and the proliferation of arms and ammunition along major highways,” the minister explained.

More Than Just Terminals — A Security and Economic Boost

The minister stressed that the project is not just about providing shelter for buses and passengers. It is designed to:

Improve road safety standards

Enhance passenger comfort and travel experience

Boost economic activity in the host states

Strengthen national security by controlling and monitoring inter-state passenger movement

 Alkali said the proposal was the product of an extensive review within the Ministry of Transportation, after which it was presented to President Tinubu and the FEC for approval.

He emphasized that once completed, the facilities will serve as central transport hubs, integrating various modes of travel, reducing travel chaos, and providing safer, cleaner, and more efficient services for millions of Nigerians.

A Step Toward Modernizing Nigeria’s Transport Landscape

Observers say the initiative aligns with the administration’s push for modern, well-organized, and economically viable infrastructure that can match global standards.

With construction expected to commence shortly, the government believes this investment will reshape inter-state travel, cut down on roadside crimes, and create thousands of direct and indirect jobs in the construction, maintenance, and transport service sectors.

For commuters, it may soon mean better waiting areas, organized ticketing systems, safer boarding points, and reduced travel stress — a shift from the current often chaotic and unsafe bus loading points scattered across the country.

If delivered as planned, these ultra-modern bus terminals could mark the beginning of a new era in Nigeria’s public transportation network.
