Mudashiru Obasa as its Speaker, following a series of resignations and reappointments among its leadership. The unexpected changes unfolded during an emergency plenary session on Monday, March 3, 2025, marking a return to the Assembly’s leadership structure before January 13, 2025.

Meranda Resigns, Then Becomes Deputy Speaker

The reshuffling began with Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda, who had been serving as Speaker, announcing her resignation while presiding over the plenary session. In a swift political maneuver, she was immediately reappointed as the Deputy Speaker, signaling a consensus among lawmakers to reinstate the previous leadership arrangement.

Other Key Resignations and Reappointments

Meranda’s resignation was not an isolated event. Three other principal officers of the House also stepped down from their respective positions:

Mojeed Fatai, who was serving as the Deputy Speaker, resigned from his position. However, in the leadership reorganization, he was reassigned as the Chief Whip.

Setonji David, previously the Chief Whip, resigned but was reappointed as the Deputy Chief Whip.

Sani Okanlawon, who had been the Deputy Chief Whip, also stepped down as part of the restructuring process.

The coordinated resignations and reappointments were part of an agreement among lawmakers to revert to the leadership structure that existed before January 13, 2025, when Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa held the position of Speaker.
