The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has officially declared Saturday, March 1, 2025, as the first day of the Holy Month of Ramadan 1446.

The announcement was made on Friday, February 28, 2025, at the Sultan’s Palace in Sokoto, following the confirmed sighting of the crescent moon, which marks the beginning of the Islamic fasting month.

Crescent Moon Sighted, Marking the Start of Ramadan

According to Sultan Abubakar III, the moon was sighted across different regions of Nigeria on Friday, which was the 29th day of Sha’aban 1446, the month preceding Ramadan in the Islamic calendar. The reports of the sightings were thoroughly verified and authenticated by Islamic scholars, religious leaders, and committees responsible for moon sighting, leading to the official confirmation of Ramadan’s commencement.

He emphasized that the process of moon sighting was carried out in strict accordance with Islamic principles and traditions. After receiving widespread reports from across the country, the National Moon Sighting Committee and other relevant Islamic authorities confirmed the authenticity of the sightings before the declaration was made.

Call for Devotion, Prayers, and National Unity

The Sultan, who is the spiritual leader of Muslims in Nigeria, urged all Muslims across the country to take advantage of this sacred month by dedicating themselves to prayers, fasting, self-discipline, and increased devotion to Allah.

He also encouraged believers to use the period to pray for the peace, prosperity, and stability of Nigeria, as well as for its leaders, so they can govern with wisdom, justice, and fairness.

“This is a period of deep spiritual reflection, devotion, and closeness to Allah. Let us use this opportunity to seek forgiveness, show kindness to others, and intensify our prayers for the progress of our dear nation,” the Sultan stated.

Ramadan: A Time for Fasting, Charity, and Reflection

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is regarded as the holiest month for Muslims worldwide. It is a period of fasting from dawn to sunset, during which Muslims abstain from food, drink, immoral acts, and other worldly distractions. The fast is broken at sunset with the Iftar meal, often beginning with dates and water, followed by prayers and a larger meal.

Aside from fasting, Ramadan is also a time for increased acts of worship, charity, and recitation of the Holy Qur’an. Muslims are encouraged to show generosity by feeding the less privileged, giving to charity (Zakat), and engaging in good deeds.

The holy month culminates in the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, a festive day marking the end of fasting, where Muslims gather for prayers, feasting, and community bonding.

Government and Religious Leaders Urge Peaceful Observance

Ahead of the fasting period, government officials, Islamic scholars, and religious leaders have called on Nigerians to embrace peace, tolerance, and unity during Ramadan. Security agencies have also been urged to ensure the safety of worshippers, especially during Taraweeh (night prayers), Suhoor (pre-dawn meals), and Iftar gatherings.
