FG Raises Fees for Nigeria’s International Passports, Effective September 1.√√√√Newzspy.
The Federal Government has announced a significant increase in the cost of obtaining Nigeria’s international passports, a move aimed at sustaining the quality and integrity of the country’s travel documents. The price hike was disclosed by Kenneth Udo, the Spokesperson for the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), in an official statement released on Wednesday.
According to Udo, the new fees will take effect from September 1, 2024. This decision comes as part of the government’s broader efforts to maintain the high standards of the Nigerian Standard Passport, ensuring that it meets international benchmarks for security and durability.
In the revised fee structure, the cost of the 32-page passport booklet, which has a validity of five years, will rise from the current Thirty-five Thousand Naira (N35,000.00) to Fifty Thousand Naira (N50,000.00). Meanwhile, the 64-page passport booklet, which offers a ten-year validity period, will now cost One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000.00), up from the previous fee of Seventy Thousand Naira (N70,000.00).
Udo emphasized that these changes apply only to applicants within Nigeria. For Nigerians living abroad, the fees for obtaining or renewing their passports remain unchanged. This move reflects the government’s effort to balance the need for sustainable revenue generation with the realities of economic conditions at home and abroad.
The Deputy Commander of Immigration also acknowledged the potential inconvenience that this fee increase might cause for prospective applicants. He expressed the NIS’s regret over any hardship the new costs may bring, while assuring Nigerians of the agency’s continued dedication to delivering transparent and high-quality services.
The increase in passport fees is expected to stir a range of reactions, particularly given the economic challenges many Nigerians are currently facing. However, the government remains committed to maintaining the standard of its passport issuance process, ensuring that Nigerian passports remain secure and widely respected on the global stage.
As the new fees are set to take effect, Nigerians are urged to take note of the changes and plan accordingly, especially those who may need to renew or obtain new passports in the coming months.
