In a significant development aimed at safeguarding the interests of Nigerian consumers, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have announced plans to reinforce their collaboration. This strengthened partnership is set to curb unfair market practices and protect consumers from exploitation across the country.
The renewed commitment was made during a courtesy visit by the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the FCCPC, Mr. Tunji Bello, to the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Olanipekun Olukoyede, at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja. The meeting underscored the importance of inter-agency cooperation in addressing the growing concerns over exploitative practices that have negatively impacted Nigerian consumers.
Mr. Bello expressed deep concern over the increasing trend of arbitrary price hikes and other unfair trade practices, which he noted have caused significant hardship for the average Nigerian consumer. He stressed that these practices undermine the principles of fair competition and equity in the market. To effectively combat these issues, he called for a stronger partnership between the FCCPC and the EFCC, leveraging the latter’s expertise in surveillance, investigation, and enforcement.
“The plight of the Nigerian consumer is one that cannot be ignored,” Mr. Bello stated. “We are witnessing an alarming rise in exploitative pricing and other unethical practices that harm consumers and disrupt the market. The FCCPC is committed to working with the EFCC to put an end to these practices and ensure that consumers get value for their money.”
In his response, Mr. Olukoyede reaffirmed the EFCC’s readiness to collaborate closely with the FCCPC in protecting consumer rights. He acknowledged the challenges that consumers face daily, particularly in an environment where economic crimes and unfair market practices are prevalent. Mr. Olukoyede emphasized the need for a united front in tackling these issues, noting that a robust partnership between the two agencies is crucial for fostering a fair and transparent market system.
“The EFCC stands with the FCCPC in this fight against economic crimes and consumer exploitation,” Mr. Olukoyede declared. “We believe that by combining our resources and expertise, we can create a more equitable market for all Nigerians. In recognition of Mr. Bello’s dedication to consumer protection and his leadership in the ongoing efforts to curb market exploitation, Mr. Olukoyede appointed him as an Ambassador to the EFCC.
