FRSC Responds to Growing Concerns Over National Driver’s Licence Delays.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has officially responded to recent media reports highlighting the delays in issuing national driver’s licences across Nigeria. The statement, delivered by the Corps Public Education and Strategic Communication Officer (CPESCO), Olusegun Ogungbemide, was aimed at addressing public concerns and correcting some of the misconceptions that have surfaced in the wake of the delays.
Ogungbemide acknowledged the critical role the media plays as a watchdog, ensuring transparency and accountability in public service delivery. However, he emphasized the need for accurate reporting to avoid misleading the public about the actual causes of the delays in the production and issuance of the National Driver’s Licence.
He stressed that the FRSC has not placed blame on any party involved in the tripartite agreement responsible for the driver’s licence production process. “At no time did the FRSC blame anyone in the tripartite regarding the driver’s licence issue,” Ogungbemide stated. He reiterated that the Corps is not interested in apportioning blame but is focused on ensuring that the system functions effectively to deliver quality service and ensure customer satisfaction.
Explaining the complexities of the licence production process, Ogungbemide pointed out that it involves sophisticated intelligence and data-gathering capabilities. These complexities necessitated a comprehensive overhaul of the entire system, which has taken time to implement. He noted that this overhaul was initiated as one of the first priorities of the current FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, who assumed office in May 2024.
Upon taking office, Corps Marshal Mohammed made it his priority to address the challenges hindering the efficient production of driver’s licences. He conducted an on-site assessment of the production facility to gain a firsthand understanding of the issues affecting operations. This visit led to a series of interventions that have since revived the production process.
According to Ogungbemide, the interventions have been successful, with the identified issues being decisively addressed and resolved. Production has since resumed at full capacity, with the Corps implementing a 24-hour production schedule to clear the backlog of pending licences. He confirmed that as of the current date, over 189,256 licences have been produced and are ready for collection at various State Boards of Internal Revenue across the country.
The Corps Marshal has also reassured the public that the integrity of the driver’s licence process will be maintained, ensuring that the licences remain internationally acceptable. He encouraged applicants who are awaiting their licences to visit their respective state collection centers to retrieve their licences as the Corps continues its efforts to clear the remaining backlog.
Ogungbemide’s statement reflects the FRSC’s commitment to resolving the delays and restoring confidence in the national driver’s licence system. The Corps remains dedicated to providing efficient and reliable service to the public, with the ultimate goal of ensuring that every eligible driver receives their licence promptly.
