The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has released comprehensive guidelines for implementing a new zero percent duty rate (0%) on specific food items. This comes as a direct response to President Bola Tinubu’s recent approval of an import duty waiver aimed at mitigating the rising cost of essential goods in Nigeria. The waiver, effective from July 15, 2024, to December 31, 2024, also includes an exemption from Value Added Tax (VAT) on these critical items.
The initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to alleviate the economic pressures on Nigerians by making essential food items more affordable. As inflation and other economic factors continue to drive up the cost of living, this policy aims to reduce the prices of basic food commodities, ensuring that they remain within reach for the average citizen.
