CSR-in-Action Group, a leader in sustainability-driven initiatives globally, successfully convened prominent industry leaders at its recent webinar to discuss the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA). Themed “Navigating the Shift – Essential Implementation Insights for Businesses”, the event provided a platform for key stakeholders to examine the PIA’s impact on community stakeholders.

Meka Olowola, Director of CSR-in-Action, opened the webinar by highlighting the importance of the event.  He said, “We recognise that all stakeholders, particularly businesses, are navigating new territory with the PIA, and their ability to do so effectively is key to the Act’s successful implementation. This is the basis for this event as a part of our constructive engagement process.”

He referenced the research conducted by CSR-in-Action, supported by the Ford Foundation, which underscored critical aspects of the PIA’s implementation. These include a substantial gender imbalance in leadership roles, a lack of comprehensive needs assessments by oil companies, and overall low awareness of the Host Community Development Trust (HCDT) framework within communities.  This crucial research highlights the need to include these groups in the broader narrative of Nigeria’s oil and gas reform.

The event featured esteemed panellists, including Dr. Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, Executive Secretary, NEITI; Mr. Dayo Okusami, Partner, Templars; Akinbambo Ibidapo-Obe, General Manager and Head of Commercial at Oando Energy Resources; Glory Alexander Thomas, Secretary Management of the Ibeno HCDT; and Eugenia Onyiriuka, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees for the Assa North HCDT. These leaders shared valuable insights on how implementing the PIA is reshaping Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, particularly in promoting transparency, inclusivity, and environmental responsibility.

A key highlight of the webinar was the discussion about the governance challenges of the PIA.  Dr Orji Ogbonnaya stated “The PIA is being implemented agency by agency without a coordinated, comprehensive strategy to guide the process. This is a major concern, as a stakeholders-driven, coordinated implementation plan, involving civil society, companies, and government is key to ensuring transparency and accountability. Without such coordination, agencies may avoid pushing the boundaries of transparency and accountability.”

Q & A Session at the PIA Webinar.

Dayo Okusami also highlighted the critical role of transparency in the governance of the petroleum sector, noting that “Before the PIA of 2021, the last major legislation in the oil and gas sector was almost 60 years old. The PIA represents progress, but we must focus on realistic and sustainable implementation. No law is perfect. The PIA needs time, proper implementation, and patience.”

The importance of community consultation was also underscored by Glory Alexander Thomas, who stated, “Projects without diligent consultation with the host communities tend to lead to failure.” This sentiment was echoed by Mrs. Eugenia Onyiriuka, who remarked, “The PIA has changed a lot of things, including how women are involved in community affairs”.

According to Akinbambo Ibidapo-Obe, “The PIA presents a unique opportunity for HCDT to empower women and promote women-owned businesses as key service providers to the industry. At Oando, we are intentional about expanding our supply chain to include more women-owned businesses, ensuring they play a significant role in driving the sector forward.”

Meka Olowola concluded by emphasising CSR-in-Action’s leading role in sustainability reporting, showcasing their pioneering work in developing the first IFRS S1&S2 compliant sustainability report for a leading organisation in the oil and gas sector.

Sudan 2-0 Ghana: Black Stars Suffer Disappointing Defeat in Libya.√√√Newzspy.

In what can only be described as a shocking and disappointing result, the Ghanaian national football team, popularly known as the Black Stars, fell to a 2-0 defeat against Sudan in an international fixture held in Libya. The match, which was part of the ongoing international football campaign, saw the Sudanese side dominate from the start, leaving the once mighty Black Stars struggling to keep up.

A Missed Opportunity for Redemption

For Ghana, this match was seen as a critical opportunity to restore their pride and assert themselves as a force in African football, following recent underwhelming performances on the continental stage. However, Sudan had other plans, taking full advantage of Ghana’s defensive weaknesses and lackluster gameplay. From the onset, Sudan displayed a level of composure and precision that the Ghanaian side struggled to match, quickly seizing control of the game.

Goals That Sealed Ghana’s Fate

The first goal came midway through the first half when Sudan capitalized on a defensive error. A swift counterattack saw Sudan’s striker slotting the ball past Ghana’s goalkeeper, sending the Libyan crowd into a frenzy. Despite attempts by the Black Stars to regroup, they were met with stiff resistance from a disciplined Sudanese defense.

Ghana’s woes were compounded in the second half when Sudan netted their second goal. A well-placed corner kick led to a powerful header that left Ghana’s defense scrambling. With the Black Stars failing to create any meaningful chances, the 2-0 scoreline remained until the final whistle, marking a significant upset in African football.

Black Stars’ Performance Under Scrutiny

The defeat has sparked widespread disappointment and frustration among Ghanaian fans, who expected more from their national team. The Black Stars, once a dominant force in African football, have struggled in recent times to replicate their former glory. This loss to Sudan, a team ranked lower in FIFA standings, is seen as another blow to the nation’s footballing reputation.

Critics have pointed to a lack of cohesion within the squad, tactical missteps, and poor player selection as key factors behind the defeat. Ghana’s coach and technical staff are likely to face intense scrutiny in the coming days, as calls for a major overhaul of the team grow louder.

West African Pride in Tatters

Ghana’s loss to Sudan also carries broader implications for West African football. As one of the region’s traditional footballing powerhouses, the Black Stars’ defeat has been seen by many as a blow to West Africa’s footballing prestige. With neighboring countries like Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire consistently delivering strong performances, Ghana’s continued underachievement on the pitch is becoming a cause for concern.

In contrast, Sudan’s victory marks a significant achievement for the North-East African nation, showcasing their growth and potential to compete with some of the continent’s more established footballing nations.

Looking Ahead

As Ghana reels from this defeat, the focus will undoubtedly turn to how the team can recover and move forward. With key international fixtures looming, the Black Stars will need to regroup, address their shortcomings, and rediscover the form that once made them a feared opponent in African football.

For now, however, Sudan will celebrate a well-deserved victory, while Ghana will be left to reflect on yet another missed opportunity to re-establish their dominance on the continental stage.

AFCON 2025 QUALIFIERS: Dabiri-Erewa Condemns Inhumane Treatment of Super Eagles in Libya.√√√Newzspy.

The Chairman and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has expressed strong disapproval over the poor treatment of the Nigerian Super Eagles football team in Libya. This occurred ahead of their AFCON 2025 second leg qualifying match against Libya, which is scheduled for Tuesday, October 15.

In a statement released on Monday, 20241014_120146-150x150 AFCON 2025 QUALIFIERS: Dabiri-Erewa Condemns Inhumane Treatment of Super Eagles in Libya.√√√Newzspy.Dabiri-Erewa criticized the Libyan authorities for their handling of the Nigerian team’s arrival. The Super Eagles, who departed Nigeria on Sunday for the match, were initially slated to land at an airport close to the match venue. However, in an unexpected turn of events, their flight was diverted to a remote airport far from the destination. The diversion forced the team to endure another three-hour journey by road to the stadium, a situation that raised significant safety concerns.

Dabiri-Erewa voiced her concern about the dangers of traveling by road in Libya, particularly given the country’s current volatile state due to ongoing internal conflict. “It is widely known that road travel in Libya is incredibly risky due to the war-torn nature of the country,” she remarked, adding that the welfare and security of the Super Eagles must be the top priority for all involved.

The NIDCOM Chairman also highlighted the unnecessary hardship the players faced after their arrival at the airport. According to reports, the team, along with the flight crew and other officials, was stranded at the airport for over 13 hours. During this time, they were subjected to “inhuman treatment,” with no access to food, water, rest facilities, or communication with the outside world. The prolonged delay was without any clear explanation from the Libyan authorities.

“This is unacceptable. For over 13 hours, the Super Eagles were held in conditions that are far from appropriate, especially considering they are guests in the country for an important international sporting event,” Dabiri-Erewa lamented. She further revealed that attempts by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to make alternative arrangements for the team were consistently blocked by the Libyan authorities, compounding the team’s frustration.

The lack of provisions for the team’s transport and safety upon landing has sparked a wave of outrage. Hon. Dabiri-Erewa called on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to immediately address the situation and ensure that incidents like this do not recur in future matches. “CAF must take this issue seriously. The safety and well-being of players must not be compromised under any circumstances, especially in a country like Libya where the security situation is already fragile.”

While NFF officials continue to work on resolving the situation, the NIDCOM Chairman urged the Super Eagles players to remain calm and focused. She assured them that the Nigerian government is fully aware of their predicament and is working closely with the Ministry of Sports and other relevant authorities to find a solution.

“We understand the difficult circumstances, but we appeal to the Super Eagles to stay composed. The Nigerian Football Federation will advise on the next course of action, and I am confident that they are prioritizing the safety of our players,” Dabiri-Erewa said.

The ordeal has cast a shadow over the team’s preparation for the crucial qualifying match. With just a day left before they take on Libya, the mental and physical toll of the delay and harsh conditions may have adverse effects on the players’ performance. However, there remains hope that the team can put the incident behind them and focus on securing their spot in the upcoming African Cup of Nations.

The incident has also sparked wider discussions about the treatment of visiting teams and officials during international sporting events. Calls are growing for stricter oversight by global and continental football bodies to prevent such occurrences in the future.

The Nigerian football community and fans alike have expressed solidarity with the Super Eagles, with many hoping that the situation will be resolved swiftly so that the team can concentrate on the task ahead. The Nigerian public awaits further updates on the team’s status and the steps being taken to ensure their safety and well-being.

Super Eagles Held Hostage by Libyan Authorities for Over 10 Hours at Airport.√√√Newzspy.

FB_IMG_1728898368317 Super Eagles Held Hostage by Libyan Authorities for Over 10 Hours at Airport.√√√Newzspy.

In a shocking incident, the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, alongside team officials, were reportedly held in a harrowing situation by Libyan authorities for more than 10 hours. The team, which had been en route to Benghazi for a crucial international match, found themselves diverted to an unfamiliar location far from their intended destination.

The incident began about an hour before the team’s scheduled landing in Benghazi. Without any prior warning or explanation, the Nigerian aircraft was suddenly redirected to another city, more than a two-hour drive from Benghazi. This unexpected diversion caught the team and their officials completely off guard.

Upon arrival at the new airport, the Super Eagles, including their captain William Troost-Ekong, were left stranded. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the team was subjected to delays and ill-treatment, with the Libyan authorities refusing to grant them clearance or provide any assistance. For over 10 hours, the Nigerian footballers were held in limbo, without access to basic amenities or a clear explanation for their predicament.

Ekong, the team’s captain, later narrated the ordeal, detailing the tense atmosphere and the frustration experienced by the players and coaching staff. “We were completely at the mercy of the authorities,” Ekong said. “There was no communication, no one told us why we were being detained. We were tired, frustrated, and just wanted to get to Benghazi.”

Sources close to the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) revealed that efforts were made to contact relevant Libyan authorities and diplomatic channels to resolve the situation, but progress was slow. It is still unclear why the team’s flight was diverted in the first place or why the team was held for such an extended period without explanation.

The incident raises serious concerns about the treatment of visiting teams in Libya and the overall security and diplomatic protocols in place for international sports events in the country. This episode comes at a time when Nigeria has been striving to enhance its international football reputation, and such treatment undermines the spirit of sportsmanship and fair competition.

Fortunately, after hours of uncertainty, the Super Eagles were eventually allowed to continue their journey to Benghazi, albeit shaken by the ordeal. As of now, the NFF is expected to lodge a formal complaint to both Libyan authorities and international football governing bodies regarding the ill-treatment of their national team.

The Nigerian public has expressed outrage on social media, with many calling for immediate action to ensure such incidents do not occur again in the future. Football fans have also voiced concerns over the safety of players traveling to certain regions for international duties, emphasizing the need for better security guarantees.

Despite the unpleasant experience, the Super Eagles are determined to focus on the upcoming match, with Ekong urging his teammates to channel their frustration into a strong performance on the pitch. “This has been a difficult situation for all of us, but we are professionals. We have a game to play, and we’ll be ready,” Ekong concluded.

This incident casts a shadow over Libya’s capacity to host international sporting events, and it remains to be seen how both countries’ diplomatic relations will unfold following this embarrassing episode.
